GPL Newbie question

by LionDeRo » Thu, 12 Aug 1999 04:00:00

I'm about to order GPL, I have an Act Labs RS FF  wheel which I really
enjoy using. I've read posts here which say that the GPL patch does
not work for FF wheels and the early GPL  release doesn't support FF.
So, I'm confused, will some kind person enlighten me please. Many
thanks.

On the contrary - GPL has the best FF implementation of all, by common
consensus!

You'll need the 1.1 patch for this, and the only downside is that there
a few problems in other areas with the 1.1 patch (mainly affecting
online play, but you can also get the odd glitch offline).  Nothing
serious enough to prevent you using it, and there will hopefully be a
"patch for the patch" within a few months.

Another upside to the 1.1 patch is that the cars have much better
default setups for newbies.

Thank you for the response. I used the demo and thought it was great
except for the lack of FF, then I saw mention of  patch 1.1 and
figured I'd get it. I had some fun with the demo wherein they model
the old Watkins Glen layout. I used to drive C production in certain
SCCA events and several times had the opportunity to do laps in F1
types, the GPL experience was haunting, the physics are superb, I
can't wait to try in with FF..

the full game.

Well my full time job was with the USAF, flew multi-engine jobbers, we
were specifically prohibited from any racing activities but my C.O.
allowed that as I drove a Jag 140mc he wouldn't be too concerned if I
used it for "driver ed". So I did and got a 2nd in my first go, one of
the guys in the final race that day was Phil Hill, another was Ken
Miles, Ken had just built the "Shingle", fastest MG ever!  Back then
the first 3 cars to finish in each event were eligible to race against
each other in the final.
I got to hang around these guys and not only race with/against them
but to share in their projects and I treasure the memories. Ken was
killed in a successor to that car, most of the other guys are still
around, some I stay in touch with.  Phil was instrumental in the
Pebble Beach concourse de elegance and so many other things important
to racing.
I drove three  F1 cars all of which are modeled in GPL  and I long to
"wring" them out, something I could not really do while behind the
wheel of a "loaner" which I had sworn to bring back whole. I confess I
was yelled at for locking the wheels but it was sooooooo easy.
Phil always said "pretend you have a hard boiled  egg on the brake
pedal and you don't wanna crack it."

So what are we complaining about the pedals of the LWFF set! In real life
braking was very sensitive and thus difficult too. Logitech "modeled" it
right:))

BTW: Did you buy GPL already Lion? If so what's your opinion? Please post it,
it's nice to see your comment since you've actually "been" there!
