what is advantage of USB v. serial for LWFF

Hello.  I am using serial port LWFF, and do not have the USB
connector.  I went to Best Buy and Comp USA to look for a
converter/adaptor, but they want $79.99 for the Belkin adaptor that
adds serial to the USB.  Three quesitons,  (1)  is there THAT much of
an advantage to USB v. serial?  and (2) if so, is there a much cheaper
alternative? and (3) does connecting this way (serial LWFF through USB)
give the same performance as LWFF with USB direct connection?  Thanks

I have a Logitech wheel (not force feedback) which I have used in both
serial and USB modes on the same computer for the same game (GPL) and I
haven't seen any difference at all. Theoretically (and I might be out on
a limb here) I don't believe it should make any difference, other than
the convenience of have the ability to hotswap controllers using USB.

I just replaced a Thrustmaster Formula Pro (serial) with their FF model
(serial and USB).  With the old one I occasionally had jitter inputs (even
when it was new), a new SB Live cleared it up a lot.  With the new one
(hooked up via USB) the inputs are much more precise.

I don't know if it's the device or connection method.

For fear of kicking in an open door... your serial port remains available?
;-)

I've tried both serial and USB on my LWFF and I didn't really notice a
difference. Having it on USB is more convenient for me and so that's where
it's connected now.

Yeah? Check the TopGear Forum Jan. You may want to check that serial
connection out! :-)

When I bought my LWFF in the UK about 18 months ago there was no Serial/USB
connector in the box. I got in touch with Logitech direct using the phone
number on some of the documentation included and within days they had sent
me one from overseas somewhere - could have been Switzerland - much better
value than shelling out $80!

You were lucky, they told me I had to send them the complete unit
for replacement to obtain a USB converter.

AFAIK, All LWFF's come with a double adapter, i.e. one end connects to wheel
while the other end has a serial connection with a USB connector for this,
standard.

Really, if you haven't got the adapter, a general purpose one shouldn't be
that dear, $80 is over the top.
You might get a 2nd hand one in ads or something.
Logitech themselves may be able to help you out with their own adapter or PC
shops selling LWFF might take one out of a box if you ask very nicely.
There shouldn't really be a difference between USB and serial as the USB
adapter is an extension of the serial port wire from the wheel. The USB is
just much more convenient for me so I use it. For there to be any difference
I feel it would need to be a totally separate lead from the wheel to PC.
Some will say that USB has less lag tough.

I have the LWFF GP which is USB only (iel. it didn't come with any adaptor).

I haven't driven a FF wheel via gameport so I can't help you there.
But my biggest reason for USB is that I can plug my old T2 pedals
into the gameport and have an analog clutch.

On my (ageing) system the LWFF via USB is much better than serial. On newer
systems this may not be a problem though.

Are you serious?  I had a paddle start to go bad, so I called and ask
if they could send me out a replacement part.  (the button was going
bad) He said no, but if I could fax in a copy of my proof of purchase
he would send me out a new wheel.  (it was still under warranty by one
month)  In 3 days I got a new setup, wheel, pedals, power pack, USB
adapter, the works.  Plus, I was able to keep my old one for parts.
(what he suggested)  Needless to say, I was pretty happy with that
deal.

usb is digital input, game port is analog, serial is digital

in THEORY if your computer is LOADED with work an analog is better because
it's easier to be in "mid range" than "up and down" (remember the analog
display as opposed to the digital ones).

So USB/Serial Vs Game means game wins but USB Vs Serial means...its the same
(except for the speed of the port but for a stick/wheel it doesn't matter
anyway)

but anyway nowadays the computers are fast enough.

Also on another point, my personal guess is that in 2-3 years the serial
port will be...GONE, and the game port will be ALSO GONE....

Go for USB

I have a logi gamepad  and was wondering if I could use this adapter with
other non Logi products to free up the serial,  is that possible?
