info for fellow stutterers:

i was suffering from occasional stuttering, every lap or so, would
drop to 0-3 fps for a second, then back to normal (36fps).  it got
worse when i installed the car and wheels graphics pack.

then i changed a setting on the driver which was labelled something
like:

use extra ram in pci mode

this was set to 20 Mb.  i changed it to 0, which it didnt like, so it
reverted to its defalut, which is 12Mb (could be 15, can't quite
remember), and the stuttering is now completely gone!

Could you please  give more details where did you change a setting?

There is a setting in the Asus Display Card Control Pane (Nvida Series).
Click on the Open GL tab and at the bottom it reads Max System memory for
textures in PCI Mode. Mine is set at 30 MB.

Hope it helped.

I've played with it but have not seen any changes in the stuttering.

Ya, I know the feeling .1.4 T-Bird overclocked to 1.5, 512 DDR, GeForce Pro
64 mb version
Santa Cruz Sound card latest drivers all on a Abit KG7 board. All my games
are smooth except GPL.
Stutters Static etc. I'm depressesed.  :(

Have you tried the 3dfx solution?
(sorry I just HAD to say that!)

Yea, I loved my voodoo32000, but i wasn't going to put that in a P4 1.6!

> Could you please  give more details where did you change a setting?

ok. (from memory)
on the desktop, right mouse button, display properties
    settings tab
        advanced settings button
    GeForce MX tab
    more D3D options

and right there somewhere is a line that reads something like

System ram to use in pci mode [15] MB

and my core.ini settings are exactly what the d3d patch readme file
gives for a geforce card.

this was with a geforce2mx, 32mb, on win98, 128MB ram. with the
display drivers i downloaded about 6 months ago.  sorry i cant be too
specific, machine is at home.  and i run enditall before running gpl.
i'm running d3d not GL, i could not get GL to work properly.

at its worse my stuttering tended to happen at exactly the same spot
on each lap.  my guess as to what was going on:

the track loads, card says to gpl 'ive got 32+20 mb', gpl says 'great,
here you go' and throws 52Mb of textures at it.  gpl runs, but when
the card needs some of the 'off card' textures, it has to do a bit of
swapping around of memory.  and this need would arise at the same
point on each lap.  if the card had said '32Mb' then it would only
have got 32mb of textures, and no swapping required.

couple the swapping bit with win98's virtual memory swapping, and it's
could start to freeze slightly when doing all this swapping.  15mb
works bettor cos it falls just below a size limit defined somewhere in
windows/memory/disk sector size/whatever.

but i'm no computer scientist.  well, actually...

Most likely that he plays other games besides GPL.

Yea, I'm getting 40-85 fps in F12001 graphics maxed in 1024x768, gp3
graphics maxed in 1280x1024 under 100% always, and N4 a solid 42 fps in
1024x768 with everything maxed, it's just GPL and the old d3d patch that are
the problem.

One could install a voodoo3/4/5 PCI in to this machine and use that
card for GPL, then again have you checked you sound drivers? If my
memory serves me right most stutters in GPL are sound related. Maybe
change the Sound Quality line in the app.ini to 0? or change the
sounds to the smallest amount nad see if it stops.
