New house = GPL modem probs

by Martin Fa » Thu, 28 Jan 1999 04:00:00

Sorry for the long post but my favorite pastime of head-to-head GPL is
almost history...

I have been playing GPL successfully with a friend using a
modem-to-modem connection at a distance of about 9 miles across town.
Occasionally, it would hang up right when it connects but most of the
time it would lock on using the 26400 setting and be rock solid for
hours.  Well, I moved into a new neighborhood that is only 2 miles at
most from my friend and we can't connect!!  It picks up and immediately
disconnects every time, at EVERY baud rate.  I know my modem settings
backwards and forwards (FIFO buffers at lowest setting etc.)  This is
not an internet connection so the DUN tune-up stuff from Alison Hine's
site is not too applicable even though I've tried it all anyway.  As a
point of reference, my normal internet connection (with my USR v.90
modem) was 51K at my old place and now the highest I've seen is 46K
(with no disconnects) which is not that bad but it does seem to indicate
a noisier line. (Tried all phone outlets in the house with the same
result so if it is noisy wiring, it's outside the house).  While in GPL,
the modem goes off hook and says the other player is connected but then
immediately disconnects.  It seems that there is a brief moment during
the initial connection in GPL that is VERY unstable and once it gets
over the hump, the connection is solid.  Haven't been able to get past
that point at my new place though.  Any help would be greatly
appreciated!!!
Thanks in advance,

Marty

It does sound like you have ***quality lines coming to your house.
Have your phone company check the line quality of the service up to your
house.

Since you just moved and that seems to be causing the trouble, I'd
suggest that you contact your phone company to let them test the phone
line to your home. They can even test it while your talking to them and
it only takes a few moments.

Good luck,
Johan

New house = GPL modem probs

I don't think that is it. I've had the same problem myself. The way I got
around this is by changing the modem drivers to the default Windows 28800
drivers. Now, this has worked once and I've been able to play with a
purticular friend of mine without any problems. Then another friend of mine
wants to play but we have the same problem (connetion followed by immediate
disconnection) and changing the drivers on his PC and trying different speeds
did not do any good. We still have the same problem. If there is anyone out
there who has had similar problem and has been able to resolve it then please
let me know 'cos it has me puzzled.

Thanks,

David Mocnay

New house = GPL modem probs

This might help.

GPL relies on the system telling it the correct modem-to-modem connect
speed.  Often times the system will report the serial port-to-modem speed
instead (due to bogus modem.inf files, as far as I can tell).  You can tell
GPL to ignore the speed the system reports, and use some other speed
instead.  Try the following (both you and your friend must follow this
procedure, and both of you must use the same baud_rate):
Create a plain text file named core.ini (using Notepad, for example) in
GPL's home directory.  In this file, place the following two lines:

[ Communications ]
assumedModemConnectSpeed = baud_rate

where you replace "baud_rate" with some valid baud rate (19200, 21600,
24000, 26400, 28800, etc.)  Be sure to choose a number that is no higher
than the actual speed your modems connect at.  Since you used to connect at
26400, but your current lines seem less capable of supporting higher speeds
(46K vs. 51K to your ISP), maybe you should try 24000, or 21600 first.  If
that works, try going higher.  Again, both you and your friend _must_ use
the same number.
