Sorry for my errant post just moments ago :-)

I don't recall seeing your previous post, so this might not help the
problem you're having, but here goes...

GPL will attempt to use all the bandwidth available on a modem-to-modem
connection. Unfortunately, either TAPI (the telephony API on Windows), or,
for some modems, the modem information file that TAPI uses, is buggy.
Sometimes TAPI will report to GPL a connect speed that is higher than the
actual speed at which the two modems connected. This enevitably leads to a
failed connection.

You can tell GPL to ignore the connect speed reported by TAPI, and assume
that the connection was established at some other baud rate. In the same
folder as the GPL program (gpl.exe) create a text file named core.ini using
Notepad (or another plain text editor). In this file, place the following
two lines...

[ Communications ]
assumedModemConnectSpeed = baud_rate

Replace "baud_rate" with a baud rate that is no greater than the actual
speed at which the modems connect. For example, if you know the modems are
actually connecting at 24000bps, use 24000. If you're unsure of the baud
rate at which the modems connect, it's probably best to guess low (normal
speeds would include 19200, 21600, 24000, 26400, 28800, etc.) If you guess
too high, the connection will probably be dropped before long (if it's
established at all). It is important that both the dialer and
answerer(client and server) use the same number.

Also note that sometimes TAPI will ignore the baud rate that you specify in
the drop-down list next to the modem description on GPL's multiplayer setup
screen. GPL tells TAPI to connect at a speed no higher than this number. We
put this in so that you can force a lower speed connection if you find that
the modems connect at a higher speed, but the connection is unreliable at
that speed.

Yes it is...  This is a reply Alison Hine sent another person with
modem-to-modem problems.  It isn't to promising, but do check out her
FAQ if you haven't already and fire that e-mail off to Sierra.

(copied without permission):
I believe there are problems with modem to modem connections in GPL.  I
have not been able to get it to work, and other people have difficulties
too.  OTOH, for some people it works fine.

To find the page linked to in section 5.4, go to the online version of
my FAQ, at http://nh.ultranet.com/~alison/gpl/ and read the GPL Online
FAQ.  It leads to a page with the DUN connection information on it.

Thanks to all for the modem conx info both here and email.
