GPL modem to modem..first person to establish this please let me know.

I have been putting out a ton of feelers on this subject and I have received
one reply from the GPL.gamestats forum, that person as well couldnot get
direct connection modem to modem to work. For some reason when GPL
establishes a connection it closes it right away. Anyone out there been able
to play a direct connection Modem to modem game yet with the final released
version of GPL?

Yes. My friend and I ran two full races today. One at Monza and one at
Watkins Glen. He lives one area code away (about 40 miles). We connected
on the first try and had lag-free *** for over 90 minutes. It was
quite enjoyable.

Did you have any problems connecting? what were the modems on both sides?
Did you lower the connection speeds? Please give me some more info..Iam

Mike,

My friend and I were able to hook up, both using 28.8K settings.  HOWEVER, we
did experience what you experienced about half of the time.  It takes us
about 2 or 3 dials to connect (without it closing immediately on connect).
We did try lower speeds and the same thing happened.  When it did connect
though, it was solid for 2 hours (of the most mindblowing *** experience
ever I might add!).  Papyrus has always had one of the best modem-to-modem
connections for racing sims so I'm a little surprised that it seems slightly
flakey.  So, that said, I can't really help you.  This is just so you know
you're not alone.

Nope. Connected on the first try.

USRobotics 56Kbps internal PNP here. USRobotics 28.8Kbps external there.

Lower them from what? We both set to 28.8, since that was the lowest
common denomenator.

G'day Mike.

Can't help you yet as I'm in Australia and we don't have the game yet
:-(((((( but I'm very interested in this as my mate and I are eagerly
waiting to do modem to modem.

Just a thought have you tried connecting with your mate through a program
like Hyperterminal just to make sure both modems do the handshaking
correctly and then stay connected??, also do you have something like call
waiting on the same line, I know this can cause alot of problems, sorry
could'nt help you more, but look on the bright side at least you have the
game :-).

Rgds Phil.

Hi there,

A friend and I raced over modem (DSVD yet) yesterday. Well, not so much
raced but practiced (ie crashed alot). We were on the modems for a couple
of hours. The only problem we had was cars would disappear and reappear at
times, this is a problem, caues lots of confussion We limited the computer
control cars to 4 then to 2 and that seemed to help a little. We tried the
Glen,Spa and The Ring. Great fun, even more than Nascar 2.

We live about 25 miles appart and NEVER get a connection  over 24000-26400.
My Phone line is the problem there I believe.

GPL modem to modem..first person to establish this please let me know.

I thought I had put this in the readme.txt, but apparently not...

GPL will attempt to use all the bandwidth available on a modem-to-modem
connection.  Unfortunately, either TAPI (the telephony API on Windows), or,
for some modems,  the modem information file that TAPI uses, is buggy.
Sometimes TAPI will report to GPL a connect speed that is higher than the
actual speed at which the two modems connected.  This enevitably leads to a
failed connection.

You can tell GPL to ignore the connect speed reported by TAPI, and assume
that the connection was established at some other baud rate.  In the same
folder as the GPL program (gpl.exe) create a text file named core.ini using
Notepad (or another plain text editor).  In this file, place the following
two lines...

[ Communications ]
assumedModemConnectSpeed = baud_rate

Replace "baud_rate" with a baud rate that is no greater than the actual
speed at which the modems connect.  For example, if you know the modems are
actually connecting at 24000bps, use 24000.  If you're unsure of the baud
rate at which the modems connect, if's probably best to guess low (normal
speeds would include 19200, 21600, 24000, 26400, 28800, etc.)  If you guess
too high, the connection will probably be dropped before long (if it's
established at all).  It is important that both the dialer and answerer
(client and server) use the same number.

Also note that sometimes TAPI will ignore the baud rate that you specify in
the drop-down list next to the modem description.  GPL tells TAPI to
connect at a speed no higher than this number.  We put this in so that you
can force a lower speed connection if you find that the modems connect at a
higher speed, but the connection is unreliable at that speed.
