GPL Modem to Modem problem...

by Martin Fa » Fri, 29 Jan 1999 04:00:00

David,
You are not alone... See my post yesterday in the newsgroup called " New house =
GPL modem probs".  Right now, I'm working the noisy phone line angle and trying to
get my phone company to come out and assess if that is the problem.  In the
meantime, I'm going to try your suggestion and borrow my USR 28.8 modem from work
and install it home to see what happens.  If this works, it means that my V.90
modem + noisier phone lines + GPL don't mix.  GPL seems to be waaaaay more finicky
with this than other games.  I'm not sure if it is just the increased bandwidth
requirements or a flaw in the modem-to-modem implementation.

Good luck,
Marty

GPL Modem to Modem problem...

by David Mocn » Sat, 30 Jan 1999 04:00:00

I have a problem in GPL when I try to do a modem to modem link up with a
friend of mine. The GPL connects and then almost instanly disconnects the
connection. We've tried all GPL  settings and host/join combinations to no
avail.
Now here comes the tricky part... I frequently link up (modem to modem) with a
different friend. We had this "connectio followed by disconnection) problem at
the start as well but the way we fixed it is by installing standard Win95
28800 drivers on both of our computers (I have a 28k modem). Now it works for
us like a treat. We connect practically instanlty and race 'till we drop. We
have practically no warping (99.9% of the time).
Back to the problem. I tried fixing this problem on the "new" friends computer
by putting on the standard 28800 drivers (he has a 56k modem). This did not
change the problem... GPL would still connect and immadiatelly disconnect. Now
this person can get on the net and even connect to VROC without any problem so
can anyone tell me why we cannot do a modem to modem link?

Can anyone help please?

Thanks in advance,

GPL Modem to Modem problem...

Marty,
Try using the driver with your current modem... the guy who I normally play
with has a 56k modem but used the "standard 28800 modem" driver (windows
should have this one already within the system so you should be able to change
this without a driver disk).

David Mocnay

ps. Let me know how you went.
