I'm looking at a new video card in the next couple of
days and wanted to know what people think of my two
choices. It's either going to be a Ati Radeon 9500 pro
or some kind of Geforce 4 ti-4200 agp and both with
128 megs of ddr ram. My main games of concern are
of course GPL and Nascar 4 plus the Microsoft Combat
flight sims (1,2 and 3) and i'm thinking of down the road is
Racing Legends by the West brothers. I can't afford a
Radeon 9700 Pro or a ti-4600 but would like to know which
one of the other two people would pick because i'm stuck
and my Voodoo 5 is getting real old. I still love the Voodoo 5
for GPL but i think it's about time too replace her.
Thanks Everyone for any help.
Steve!

i had the same question, in my new pc i go for the 9500 PRO because it
has better fps by use of anti aliasing and anisotrofic filtering
see toms hardware site for a test

Definitely the Pro; the non-Pro ATIs are the equivalent of nVidia's lame MX
line.

Just in case you didn't consider it the Ati Radeon 9500 128meg card uses
the 9700 board in most designs. And useing RivaTuner you can open the
other half of the memory bus to end up with a 9700 while just paying for
a 9500. It does work I got a Sapphire 9500 128meg card for $154.00. Note
these are 9500 128meg cards NOT 9500Pro. It is all quite confusing I
know but it could very well be the best money to framerate setup
available right now. Goto www.guru3d.com for starters to understand how
this works. Another note is some people reporting artifacts and such are
trying to overclock it all the way to a 9700PRO after pacthing it to a
9700. You don't have to overclock it to equal a 9700 only if you wan't
to try to equal a 9700pro.

You are mistaken Steve.

The GF4-MX series was based on the GF2 core.  The 9500 IS based on the
9700pro core albeit with reduced number of pipelines and slower clk/mem
speed.  No comparisons between the two other than they are 3d accelerated
video cards on the AGP bus with 128mb memory ;).

Get a 9700 pro from Circuit City to try. The have a 14 day no questions
asked return policy. I had an 8500 that locked up since the day I bought it.
Tried the NVIDIA and 9700 pro from Circuit City. I chose to go with the DX9
support of the 9700 and because Circuit City did not offer the all in wonder
I found the AIW9700 pro online for under 380.00 no lockups or stutters in
any games. Very Happy and ready for the DX9 games in the future

I just went through that, with an OEM Sapphire 9500 with infineon 3.3ns
memory.  See my "upgrade time follow-up" post from 1/31 for details.
SoftR9700 worked fine, but I got as many minor artifacts at default clock
speed as when o/c'ed to near-Pro levels; much more so in OGL than D3D.  But
I actually prefer the IQ of my Ti4400, mainly due to the more natural (imho)
look of the lighting and reflections in Papy's sims, plus the ability of the
GF to do AA in 16bit.  The ATI's AA is definitely better  though, and it's
amazing in how it can do high resolutions at 32 bit color, along with high
levels of AA and AF, with only a tiny hit in FPS compared to the GF.

Think I'll wait for the next round...

Check the price differences betw. the ATI Pro and non-Pro vs. the nVidia MX
and non-MX cards and call me in the morning.

I'm not real sure what price has to do with anything?  You stated
in-correctly that the 9500 is the same as the MX series was for the Nvidia
line.  It's not!

Why would I want to call you in the morning and not the evenin?   In fact
I'm actually calling you something right now ;)

Sorry about that I missed the part you had artifacts at default clock
settings. I guess I just got lucky.

Price = performance; that's the way it works in the marketplace.

Call me anything...except late for din-din.

If that were true, a 9500 pro would be faster than a 9700 non-pro.  The
ladder of ATI cards rank by speed goes like this:

9700 Pro
9700
9500 Pro
9500
9000 Pro
9000

The 9000 series is the equivelant of the MX series and also matches the MX
in price catagories.

My 9500 Pro fried after 4 hours use. Sending it back.
 I keep reading discussions about:

Anti-aliasing
FSAA
anisotropic filtering
V-sync

Are these things specific to specific cards? How do you turn them on
and off? I want to make sure the replacement card works OK!
Thanx, Sam
