Has anyone else noticed the slow down even in the vga verion when you go from
practice and warmup to the actual race.  With all 38 cars starting the race in
Atlanta, I get a TREMENDOUS slow down in frame rate as you gointo turn one.  I
have all the detail set to off except smoke and skid marks, 3 cars heard, 4 cars
seen ahead and one car seen behind.   I am fed up with this because I don't get
the same problem in indycar racing.   Pentium 100 here I come.!!

Does any one with a similar setup [486 -33LB & 8 mb of ram] experience the same
problem ?

Can anyone suggest changes in number of opponents graphical settings etc. that
seem to give them the best mix of speed/playability and graphics together ?

Yep, I have the same thing in VGA mode. I like smoooooth animation so I
end up turning off everything except car detail (gotta see who I'm putting
in the wall ;) ), smoke/skid/etc., and wall texture.
 I have a 486/66 vlb, stealth 64 - 2megs, and 16megs of ram.

 I run 19 or sometimes 14.

 Later,

A soundblaster demands a fair amount of processor-time too...

Turn off track texture-it uses the most cpu time. I run svga, on a dx80x2.
Also try nascar -f.
