Does anyone know if it's a good idea to clean my dirty pot with white spirit
or something similar. I know WD40 destroys it, but I don't know about white
spirit.

Don't do it Tim... you'll regret it. Petroleum based cleaning agents are to
be avoided like the plague.

Ideally you should use iso-propanol ***. Available from CF as
"IsoClene", for example. Another option is Kontakt60 from Kontakt Chemie
(dunno the active ingredient in that one). Acetone, ether or pure ***
might do the trick as well.

Don't open up the pots... instead "drown" them in the cleaning liquid,
actuate them and "rinse" them.

WD40 is a lubricant, NOT a cleaner.

Buy a spray can of contact cleaner, which is intended for these jobs. Every
electrical or HiFi store sells them.

About 2 months ago I had probs with my throttle pot....it wouldnt calabrate
(it would keep jumping around). I didnt have any contact cleaner so I used
WD-40 on it and it has been working 100% after 2 months of hard use.

All the best,
Lorne

I just want to say that I am not recommending you use WD-40..... I wanted to
race
that night and I took the chance.... "so far" it`s working fine, but I
really should pick
up some contact cleaner and clean it out. . .

Here's a post from 3 long days ago:
-----------------------------------------

I wouldn't recommend WD40. Best to get some tuner cleaner from a radio parts
place like Radio Shack (shadio rack? - I used to manage one). Also, you can
use brake cleaner or electrical contact cleaner from an auto parts store,
but make sure they are safe for plastic if you are spaying near any plastic
parts, otherwise you'll melt them.

radio crack electronic cleaner is OUTRAGEOUSLY expensive
go to a auto parts store and get some contact cleaner
check to see if it harms plastic!
stick the nozzle in the pot and spray liberally, work the pot, spray etc etc etc

you could lube the pot, ( they are from the factory ) with DIELECTRIC grease
or...with a small bit of wd-40 which is a corrosive btw!
good luck

WD-40 will not harm your pots. It won't necessarily clean them either.  Be
careful using laquer thinners, mineral spirits, brake cleaners, or solvents
containing acetone -- not good for varnished copper windings.

Jan, that is an utterly false statement.  WD-40 *is* an excellent cleaner.
If you need it spelled out for you, take a look at http://www.wd40.com

Actually, I've been using WD40 on my pots for about 6 months now, and
they haven't dissolved yet. I think that generally it's OK, but only
certain types of pots with different surface material may have problems.
I have Thrustmaster gear, so these pots seem to be able to cope with it.

WD40 gets them working really nice, but it doesn't last, so this is
somewhat of a regular procedure I have to do. If I want to make them
work perfectly (you need to for GPL :) ), I would say about once a month
or two is what works for me.

From the website....

<quote>
With a household name like WD-40?, users know they can trust a brand that
cleans, penetrates, protects, and lubricates just about anything. </quote
                          ^^^^^^^^^^|
                                    |---> I rest my case.

You can't have lubricating residues on the resistance track, they reduce
conductivity and attract dust.

I'm surprised that someone with Rick's. . . er, shall we say, sophistication
towards received truth would take corporate sales drivel as evidence of said
truth.
