T2-Cleaning the Pots--HELP!!!

by CD Rom » Wed, 29 Mar 2000 04:00:00

I'm cleaning the pots in an effort to keep the car from turning
right when I steer left. (I've tried calibrating the correct way and the
reverse way many times and believe it's time to move on.) I checked the
instructions on Thrustmaster's website. I'll post the main instructions
so you'll understand why I have problems with their directions.

Locate the potentiometers inside the unit (looks like a volume
control knob). You will see on the back a very little knotch in
which you can spray the contact cleaner. Give the potentiometer a
little twist and enjoy your play time.

Hmmm. I took off the back case and can't find what I see in the
picture on the site.
After taking off the case, is the Pot the first thing I see at the
end of the steering wheel or do I have to unscrew more screws to get at
it?
I hope cleaning the Pots will help until I can get the Acts Lab
Force RS. Does anyone else have good experience with that one and NASCAR
3?
        TIA

Nevermind. I just sprayed WD-40 everywhere I could, now it works
perfectly. It actually feels smoother and my tires don't squeal in the
corners. Maybe everyone should try this.

BAD MOVE!!!!!

now go get contact cleaner and clean off the WD-40, it'll ruin the pots.

I'll have to go with Rik on this one.  WD-40 is a short-term
fix at best (as is excessive spraying with contact cleaner).  Too much
contact cleaner and you'll find your wheel spiking horribly.  Too much
WD-40 and your pot will die a slow death.

What do I do?  I pop out and disassemble the pot and clean off
the gunk covering the contacts with paper towels and Q-tips (take care
that the fibers don't catch!).  Make sure you leave that big gob of
lubricant on top of the spindle.  Finally, I apply a light coating of
mild lubricant (I'm currently experimenting with Pedro's Extra Dry
Chain Lube- so far so good!) on the ring and contacts, reassemble the
pot, and pop it back in.

In the long run it is less of a hassle than spraying the pot
every week, and having to breathe in toxic fumes every time you race
(realism nuts may get a kick out of this, however).

If you really want to fix your T2, buy a top quality sealed pot and figure a
way to mount it in your unit.  My experience with open pots has been once you
start cleaning them, you never stop, and you find yourself doing it weekly.
It can be a bit of work initially to come up with a way to mount a
replacement, but it certainly pays off in the long run.  I managed to mount a
sealed, conductive plastic pot in my T2 and haven't had to clean it since,
it's as smooth as the day I did the install.  JMHO.

I plan to get an Act Labs Force RS next month. I just wanted my 4
year old T2 to get me through until the upgrade.
