First try reducing the number of sounds heard.  If that doesn't help,
try reducing the level of hardware acceleration in the MonsterSound
control panel.

I've got the same problem.  It's awful: big-time.  I'm using an Ensoniq
AudioPCI card through Altec ACS45's.  Changing the # of sounds has no effect,
nor does changing the sound settings in the  app.ini or player.ini files.  What
it does to the Ferrari's sound is painful to listen to - Arrrgh!  No problem
with any other games.  Any thoughts out there??

Well..you can uppack the sound.dat file and edit the wind noise down
to nothing.  One approach, anyway.

It isn't the wind noise, is it? Seriously. If it only happens when
driving the car and goes away if you hit F10 (arcade view), it is the
wind. I don't know if one can turn it off.

I turned down the volume of the .wav file in the demo. After replacing
the generic Lotus engine with one from a website, the wind was just
too noisy.
Does the pack/unpack utility we used for ICR2 files work with GPL?

Nope.  Ensoniq AudioPCI w/latest CL SB 64PCI drivers, DX6, & Altec ACS45's, and
it's from the engine sounds.  I unpacked the sound.dat file and played the wavs
seperately.  There's a gravelly static-like quality to the sound that's
annoying at a minimum, but downright criminal with the Ferrari.  I don't know
whether it's a hardware problem or a listener preference, but I can't imagine
the rapturous responses to the 312B engine sound (or the others) if they're
hearing what I hear.  You get enough to know it's a great sound, if not for the
static (maybe not the best word), but are aggravated by the overall quality.
A bit like listening to blown speakers, but they're not.  It really gets in the
way of enjoying GPL.  In Sierra's tech support FAQ for GPL, they suggest
running DXSETUP from the CD and checking if the sound drivers show as
"certified" for Direct X.  Did that and CL's latest (for this card) are not.
Still, I haven't seen this problem elsewhere.   Hmmmmmmmmmm.

Have to agree with Steve B.;  I also have the Ensonic card w/ latest
drivers, and engine sound, while OK, cannot be what others are hearing.

Scratchy sound, almost reminiscent of a worn out LP.  (for those who are too
young to remember, an LP(sometimes refered to as a "record") was a funny
looking flat piece of some kind of plastic, usually black, that you rotated,
put a needle on, & heard music from. As it wore out from the friction of the
needle sometimes causing little scratches, the sound deteriorated.  Hence
the term "Sounds scratchy".  Another technical marvel called an "8-track
player" would begin to sound(no pun intended ;-) ) the death knell for the
LP.  Don't even get me started on 8-tracks, or stories about pulling little
ribbons out of tiny places while in an uncompromising position, because it
was her "favorite song", will make me forget what the h*** I was responding
to.

Uhhhhh, what the h*** WAS I responding to??????

I had an that card briefly but took it back due to scratchy sounds just
running windows.  I didn't seem to happy to share pci with my rendition
card.  But I also get high frequency noise with GPL.

Guys,

I had the same scratchy sound with an AudioPCI and the latest SBPCI
drivers from Creative (the ones dated 10/2/98 on Creative's website)

I reinstalled the original SBPCI drivers, and updated them with
Creative's August 28th driver update, and the sound is now fine in GPL.

I am running a Creative Ensoniq Audio PCI with DX 6 and the drivers
from the cards installation CD and have no problems. If I am not
mistaken, the only thing Creative added with the SB 64 drivers was 4
channel audio support. GPL does not have 4 channel audio, so if you
have the option change your sound type to standard 2 channel stereo.
Just an idea.

I'm running the game on a Monster Sound M80 and have the same problems. I
called up tech support and we tried everything to fix it. after about an
hour on the phone they told me they were still testing to see if the could
find a fix for it and to e-mail them about it.

It's nice to hear that I'm not the only one having a problem and it's not
just my monster sound.

That "certified drivers" business shows up every now and then in
official FAQs. In my experience, it's usually more important that one
gets the newest drivers if a problem occurs, be they certified or not.

You said you unpacked the .wav files from the .dat file. Did they
sound wrong even when you played them seperately? Then it might really
be a problem of personal preferences. There is a saying in German that
goes approximately: "The one person's owl is the other person's
nightingale." :)
