I have an AMD K-6 200 with a 4 meg voodoo 1.  I didn't expect blinding
performance from this system, but even in trainer mode with everything off but
the track, minimum resolution and sounds,  I'm averaging around 30 frames at
Watkins Glen.  Is this normal?  With so much turned off, I guess I expected a
little better.  Training is margional at best, racing is impossible.

yeah well... i have a P200 with vodooo 1 with details on  a normal
setting i'll get 7fps with practice... so that's pretty unplayable...
I Think I'll just have to get me a PII reeeeeeaaaaaaal soon...

Temporary fix: $32 (minus $30 rebate=$2+shipping) Diamond stealth s220.  I
replaced my voodoo rush on my p200mmx, and now I'm getting an average of 25
fps in practice (glen) with detail at medium, all graphics on except driver
arms, mirrors at minimum, track scenery at medium.  Haven't tried a real
race yet, I've been too busy practicing.

I'd say the K6 200 performance reported by GRUdad is normal, but 7fps
is lower than one should expect with your machine. Do you happen to
know if your computer does have any L2 cache? It sounds as if it
didn't.

The highest fps in GPL is 36, it will not go over this whatever your system is.
30fps should be drivable.  I get fairly steady 36 at 800*600 in training with all
details on with a K6-2 350 and Voodoo 2 12meg.

Hi there,

Well, I have a 233MMX, pretty similar. But an 8MB Thriller card really
helps it out. Without it, it's impossible, but at the Glen, I got 36 fps
until the pit straight, where it would drop to 32 or so in training with
full detail. I have it overclocked now via a 75mhz bus, so I get 36 in
training almost always. However, I have anti-aliasing off and dynamic
skids off... dynamic skids are the biggest CPU hogs. When I first got
the Thriller, I thought, WOW those dynamic skids look cool! Some were
from sliding sideways, but most were from brake lockups. I'd play for a
while and then at certain corners, I'd notice the frame rate taking HUGE
dives. Couldn't figure it out... then I realized THOSE areas were ones
that were drawing MANY dynamic skid marks. Not good. Ever since then,
I've had them off.

Hope this helps,
Dave

I would say a Hercules Thriller is your best bet to replace the voodoo1.
I have it on a P200 and with 90% graphics on I get 36fps in training and
around 25-29fps with 10 AI cars.

Although I'm getting a PII-450 voodoo2 system soon :-)

Good info, Dave!

Besides, I've always found it a little unsettling to come flying into a turn
where there's a lot of fresh ***, knowing that I was the bonehead that
left it there!

Yeah, I don't mind so much if it's from a well-done drift, but those
corkscrew-shaped ones are REALLY unsettling... ;-)

People keep saying this, however I often see the frame rate numbers flicker
between 36 and 37...

I'm using a Pentium 166, 32MB of RAM and a Voodoo II. I can get around 25fps
with EVERTHING switched on, and up to 35/36fps with some features turned
off, not that there's all that much of a difference between the two.

I'd say that if you have a slow system, like mine, the Voodoo II is your
answer...

35 fps last time it worked...maybe faster once it works with these extra
32MB RAM

It can be fun however. I had a terrible spin at Monza a while ago, with skid
marks all over the place, once I had reset the car and done another lap it
looked as though their head been an enormous accident, I was then able to
look at the ground to try to figure out where I went wrong. Where had I
began turning? Where had I began to brake and at which point had I started
to lose control.

Perhaps this is just a little obsessive, but then, with a game like Grand
Prix Legends, I have the right.
