problems with voodoo3 drivers

by Harol » Sun, 25 Jul 1999 04:00:00

ever since I first installed my v3 3000 I've had the problem that just
before windows should pop up my screen just goes black. The monitor then
goes into standby as it's not receiving any input from the card I think. The
system doesn't crash there's just no picture. After installing another
driver on the same CDROM that came with the card (another date) I got the
card to work then.
Yesterday I installed the new drivers and they worked great for GPL, then I
wanted to do some ordinary shooting and decided to play some X-Wing
Alliance. And just like I've had with the other drivers the screen just went
black and the system just went on only without picture. I decided to
reinstall the old drivers and now my system keeps on giving me that black
screen I had before, just like when I first installed it (even when I use
the somewhat earlier version). So once again I installed the the newest
drivers, and now this gives me the same problem, no more picture when
starting up windows. What has happened? The new drivers worked fine when I
used them (except for X-wing) now nothing works anymore, could anybody help
me out.

It sounds as if your video card's refresh rate setting doesn't match
what your monitor needs.. Old monitor?

Get it working in normal Windows, then:

right-click desktop / properties / settings / advanced /adapter.

What refresh rate is showing? If it is 85 or 120 or something,
set it to either optimal or 60hz, and try your games. If that fixes
the games, you need to find out what the proper refresh rates for
your monitor are.

Also, try right-click desktop / properties / settings / advanced /monitor
to see what type of monitor the V3 thinks you have.

Hold on everybody.  DON'T TOUCH THAT FILE!!  I just downloaded it, and as I
always do I ran my virus scanner on it.  Its says this file contains "a
non-removable virus named Win32.BackDoor.G5(d)".  Hope nobody has executed this
thing without checking it first!

The box said "Windows 95 or better", so I installed LINUX!

sounds to me like your monitor is not capable of showing the refresh rate
that the card is running, not sure how you can alter it with a black screen
though...

Interesting....  Chuck, that virus has gotten on there within the last two
months.  I downloaded mine in May with no problem and no virus, either
(verify all downloads with latest registered McAfee).  I think it is also
posted on ZDNet or 3DFiles.com - you might see if it is still there, and if
the version they have is clean.
