New Voodoo3 drivers worth the upgrade!

by David Montan » Tue, 09 Jan 2001 00:26:00

Yesterday I upgraded my V3 2000 drivers from 1.04 to 1.07; I was pretty
surprised by the improvement.  In GPL at Monaco (full field, mirrors to cars
and track, all objects, 640x480, detail about one quarter) at the start with
1.04 I got 19-20fps.  With 1.07, I get 27.
My system:
Celeron 466
128 megs RAM
Voodoo3 2000

I'm hoping this will be enough to tie me over until WSC, F1RC, or at least
N4 are out before I do a CPU and video card upgrade,
David

How do you tell what version drivers you have?  My driver files 'detail' says
ver 4.12 - THAT can't be right...

The 1.07 was from the website, under "details" I now have 4.12.011.0666 with
a release date of 11-10-2000.  I'm pretty sure my old drivers had a release
date of 6/2000.  I got the drivers from www.3dfxgamers.com  Hope this helps,
David

If you go to the 3dfx gamers site, then drivers, then archives you
should be able  to tell  by the release date and/or the versions of the
included components.

The version number he's referring to is found in the name of the exe that
the drivers are archived and distrubuted with. For example, when you
download the v. 1.07 drivers you would get a file named: v3-w9x-1.07.00.exe.

I have no idea why they do that and then have a completely different and
utterly confusing number in the 3dfx tools control panel.

Hmm...I knew mine had to be very old - they're dated in 1999...<g>  I
downloaded drivers a couple of weeks ago, but I didn't want to***around
with updating before our GP race.  Didn't matter - my system found something
ELSE to***up...<g>
