Voodoo1 to Voodoo3 upgrading problems?

by C. Warloc » Wed, 05 May 1999 04:00:00

I thought I had seen somewhere in this newsgroup that there were some
problems going from Voodoo1 to a new Voodoo3 card. I'm upgrading my
system soon & I'd like to be sure I can do it without too many probs,
since I am a computer ***. My existing system is:

Pentium MMX 233
64 meg RAM
Diamond Monster 1 vid card
Not sure of my 2D card
Acer 3D sound card

I'd like to step up to:

P-II 400 with a new motherboard to accomodate it
No more RAM (or should I?)
Voodoo3 3000 AGP
Soundblaster Live value

GPL is the main game I play, along with the Quake2/Unreal/Daikatana
killing games my wife hates so much.(I'm a 32 year old adolescent) Am I
making wise choices? Anything I should change? (besides a P-III... too
much cash). I respect you folks & the input you can give me, so any help
would be greatly appreciated.

Just make sure you follow the included directions on the driver CD when
installing your Voodoo3.  It will remove your old V1 drivers for you.  I
think a lot of people have had problems because they failed to do this.

As for your planned upgrades, I highly recommend the Abit BH6 motherboard.
I would also suggest 128 meg ram, definately noticeable with Unreal and
other newer FPS games.  Needs to be PC 100 ram to go with that PII-400 as
well.  The SB Live Value is a good choice for the price, I just picked up an
oem version for $50 last week.

Sounds good.
But you should use at least some ram ;-)
If you want to overclock, take the Abit BH6, if not the Asus P2B
