Latest Voodoo3 drivers - thumbs up, or down?

I've just installed the latest drivers and ... er, I haven't noticed
anything untoward or especially different, except that I can now run
Half-Life and Worldcraft3.3 *at the same time* WHOOO HOOO! This probably
indicates that something *good* is going on "under the hood" (I apologise
for the highly technical terminology).  Oh, and you get this nice "task
manager" thing with a few more options.  It's probably worth it, IMHFO.

New drivers totally screwed my system.  My machine would lock-up when
exiting ANY full-screen application.  Type quit in half-life, freezes
up.  Type exit in Unreal, locks up.  Hit Quit on this game called
Mindrover, locks up.
Now I reinstalled the 1.04 drivers and everything is peachy keen.

Similar system here, PII400 128MB, SBLive, V3 2000 etc.... No problems with
either the Beta drivers or the final release 1.05 drivers. Very stable in
GPL, CMR, NFSPU, TOCA2, N3, NL, SCGT and F12K.

What is the general consensus of opinion on the version 1.05.00 WHQL drivers
(updated 4th July) for the Voodoo 3?  Improvement to older games e.g. GPL,
RC2000, Half-Life?  Any problems or even (God forbid!) slowdown in frame
rate encountered?

I was a bit underwhelmed with the jump from 1.03 to 1.04, which sorted a
System Shock 2 bug but did weird things to my display size unless I fiddled
with monitor refresh rates -- and did nothing I could notice with frame
rates.  So I thought I'd ask those with experience before sitting through a
10 MB download and dubious upgrade.

If it's important, my system is a PII 400 with 128 MB RAM and a Voodoo3 3000
AGP, 17 inch monitor at 1024 x 768 res and 24 bit colour.

Thanks
Steve

clip, clip, clip

And don't forget that you can kiss 24 bit color goodbye. It's now 256, 16 bit or 32 bit desktop only.

No offence, but why would you need to have a 24 bit desktop?

I don't see the need for anything past the 16bit desktop.....

Word of warning for people with the updated drivers:
If you reformat/install your computer and install the new drivers, remember
to install directx 7 or you'll think your computer is knackered - I know I
did....

I figure it uses less memory/resources than a 32-bit desktop, and
it's indistinguishable from the 32 bit, right?

Well, to be fair..  I don't see any significant difference between 16 bit or
32bit to be honest..  however I usually run 32bit anyway.. just for the hell
of it :)

although it doesn't sound as if this is right, but apparntly 32 bit is
easier on the machine (faster) than 24 bit.  I forget the reaosning... but I
assume it has to do with wordsize or something or other.. I could be wrong

No that would be correct.  Although some cpu's would see more of a
performance hit then others.  (Pentium pro's would probably see a huge
performance hit).

Thumbs up. Getting the latest drivers was the only way I could get Diablo 2
to work.
