Logitech Wingman Formula trouble! HELP!

by Gene Gagn » Thu, 17 Feb 2000 04:00:00

I recently got one of the Yellow Logitech wheels, its the non FF model. I
bought this wheel to replace my non working Thrustmaster T2 from the old
days. I also bought this one because it was USB and I thought it would be
nice to have that. All was fine for the first couple weeks, then I notice
the wheel seems to jiggle on its shaft... oh well, not as tough as the T2
was but I will just baby it.... except I installed the game Driver and since
then the wheel has been... well... ***ED! Won't work in any game except
Nascar3 , won't calibrate, thought I fixed it when I patched driver... nope
just as bad if not worse. SO I unistall Driver and give it back to my
friend, try to calibrate... nope, so I lose the USB connector and go back to
gameport in back of soundcard style... worked fine yesterday.... today one
of the two lights on the wheel won't light up and the wheel acts as though
its not there in Win98.... DAMMIT!!! This is starting to***me off... so I
***with it some more and decide to try the USB in a different port ( one
of the extras on the MB not the ones on my KB ) this makes both lights light
up but still have the calibration trouble. So I got here a wheel that when
its detected is useless and when its not useless is detected.... ***ing EB
had to stop selling Thrustmaster products... grumble, ***, whine...
dammit.  I just wanted a nice wheel for a fair price... I could even live
with the shitty cheap pedals... Can someone please tell me if there is
something I forgot to do? I don't feel like reformatting just for this
either.

Thanks and if you could email me I would appreciate it.

Hi Gene, I read somewhere that the usb version of logitech game
controllers have some problem with directx 7.0 and that patching it to
7.0A fixes that problem. That is what I did to fix the calibration of
my logitech joystick. Hope it helps

Glad your problem was solved.

But regarding the "jiggle at the shaft" issue- I've also noticed that
it has more play in it that the T2. How has this wheel stood up over
time for you guys? Have the pots gone on anyone's yet? Any special
maintainence tips? (Like- how in god's name do you get the thing apart
if you do need to change a pot!)

Logitech Wingman Formula trouble! HELP!

by Kevi » Tue, 22 Feb 2000 04:00:00

Unfortunately, due to the short length of the bearing, some shaft play is
unavoidable without ball bearings at least. I've had mine for a year now,
with heavy GPL use, and it hasn't gotten noticeably worse. I've had
absolutely no pot problems at all.

It is easy to take apart, although there are a lot of screws. Pop the center
of the wheel off, unplug the connector, take the nut off (usually loose, and
tightening it helps), and slide the wheel off. Undo all the silver screws in
the bottom, and the top of the housing will come off. The rest is pretty
easy to see.

Thanks for the thoughtful reply- I've taken some screws off, but there
were indeed so many I chickened out!
