F1 2002 frame rate loss with Force Feedback

by Some Call Me Ti » Fri, 19 Jul 2002 02:20:31

Since installation I've been playing the rather good F1 2002 with full FF
effects on my Thrustmaster Ferrari FF wheel and I've been getting around
25fps most of the time at full detail which is fine.

However last night I though I'd try using the keyboard to see how it was and
was a little amazed when I found I was getting over 60fps most of the time!
I know the FF effects are rather good but how come it's using up so much cpu
power?

Has anyone else found the same? Is there a tweak I could use to reduce this
frame rate loss (apart from switching the FF effects off!)

AFAIK the Thrustmaster (aka Crapmaster) FF wheels are resource hogs. It very
typical for a FF controller to rob some CPU cycles but I think the
Thrustmaster  FF Wheels are the worst offenders.

Is that right.?

I bought my Ferrai FF because I read it was not a resource hog, unlike the
Microsoft one. I'm quite happy with it.

I don't have any problems with other games. So maybe it's a problem with F1
2002.

I agree, I cant see any frame rate loss either with my Ferrari FF. However,
I have noticed that F1 2002 seems to have just started quitting to the
desktop during free practices and qualifying sessions - only does it in
championship mode.

I believe TM's first foray into FF was an horrific resource hog (going
on what I read here at the time) and maybe that rep stuck with the
above poster.

Sounds like a config issue somewhere as I haven't heard of this one
before...

That could be. I just remember all the post regarding thrustmasters first FF
wheels.  I have not heard anything regarding the Ferrari FF in particular.
Maybe they improved them and you have a different problem. Sorry.

I've never had any decernable frame rate loss in any other game it just
occurs in F1-2002 and half the frame rate is quite a lot!

It could well be a config problem somewhere, most likely in F1-2002 as all
other games are fine.

Any ideas where to look would be most welcome.

I've got a Logitech Wingman FF and I get a performance hit of around 30%
with FF enabled - but only under Windows XP.  Under Win9x it doesn't seem to
cause any decrease - hence I've resorted to a dual boot (!annoying)  GPL
also seems slightly choppy in WinXP too.
