F1 2002 frame rate fix?

Has anyone thought up a frame rate fix for the problems using the HUD in F1
2002? When I hit the 2 key to bring it up during a race the frame rates take
a massive hit.

I've seen this on other systems to, not just mine.

System specs:

1.8GHz Pentium III
512MB RAM
GeForce3 64mb

No problems with the frame rates other than bringing up that damned display.
Without it, figuring out which gear the car's in can be difficult from
different views.

You could try a P4 3.0 GHz CPU and a GeForce 4 video card.  That would
likely fix any frame rate issues you are having ;-)

  The mirrors kill about 20fps but the hud doesn't seem to bog my system
down.  Are you using FSAA or anything similar?  HAve you got screen
resolutions in the 1200x1020 or higher?
The GF3's really pay a price for high rez screens.
