How to improve frame rates in GTR 2002?

by Kent R. Frazie » Mon, 03 Feb 2003 01:19:09

Hi all,

I would like to get my frame rates in GTR 2002 improved. I am currently
getting an average of the mid to high 20s when running a race at
Silverstone. Im not expecting extremely high rates but would like to
get something in the 30 to 40 range.

Ive never made any changes to my video card, in fact I didnt know you
could until today.

System Specs:
AMD Athalon 1.2GB
1.25 GB DDR Ram
NVIDIA GeForce2 MX400 w/ 64 MB RAM, Detonator 41.09 drivers
SB Live! OEM Sound Card,  Creative Drivers dated 3/18/2002
MSI MS-6380 LE Motherboard
Window XP Home
MS Precision Racing Wheel
M current Display Settings: 800 x 600 16 bit 100 Hz

NVIDIA settings:
Performance & Quality Settings:
Performance - Balanced
Antialising - Off
Anisototopic Filtering - Off ( I have no idea what this even is)

Direct 3D Settings:
Table Fog Emulation box is Checked (I have no idea what this even is)
Mipmap Detail Level  - Best Image Quality (I sort of have an idea about
this)
PCI Texture Memory Size - 159 MB (I have no idea what this even is)

Open GL Settings:
Detail Color Depth (For Textures) - Use Desktop  (Currently set at 16 bit)
Buffer-Flipping Mode - Auto Select (I have no idea what this even is)
Vertical Sync - On by Default (I have changed this to Always Off)
Use up to [ 5 ] MB of System memory for texture in PCI mode (I have no
idea what this even is)

GTR 2002 Settings:
Display: Everything set to "High" or "On" except the following:
Player Vehicle Detail = Full
Image Quality = Full
Default View =***pit
Heads Up Display = Off
Speed Indicator = MPH (Probably doesn't make a difference with the
issue, but just in case)
Extra Display: Everything set to "On" or "High".

Thanks for the help,

Kent

With your equipment I would suggest decreasing the image quality slider by
one notch.  Your vid card is somewhat limited in memory bandwidth, cutting
back the image quality (texture usage) should help avoid that bottleneck.

Kent,

Turn shadows to off or low and see what that does to your frame rates.

The only change to your video card I can suggest is to replace it
immediately. A GF4 TI4200 would be perfect for you and can be had for around
$140.Maybe less I havent looked for a while.

(btw...HOLY CRAP,You got a lotta ram in that rig!!!)
