Rendition card.. whilch to buy??

by Edwin Solhei » Tue, 18 Nov 1997 04:00:00

Ok.. i know this have been covered about a billion time but i've always
disgarded the posts 'cause i havn't been interrested.

But now, after the NROS i'm finally thinking of buying a rendition card.
I'm currently using a P90, 32 mb ram 'puter for online racing..
What i'm looking for is a card that will give me some better fps on ten -
and nothing else... (alltough it would be nice if it will support future
Papy sims as well.. (GPL))
Will Creative's 3D BLASTER (PCI) do the works??
(Isn't it rendition based?)
Any good advice on what card to choose.. and price ($) if possible ....

Thx.

Buy the Stealth 2.  It is cheap and fast.  I own one and have no problems
with it, it is the best card you can buy for the money right now.  And if you
want more power down the road, buy the Voodoo2 (when it's released) to go
along with the Stealth 2.  That's what I am planning to do.

Get a Diamond Stealth II S220,Its based on the Verite 2100 series. It has equal
performance to as 3Dfx card for half the price($100).And is supported by more
racing sims than 3Dfx.

If you have little or no money get the Rendition card.
If you can afford it, then get 3dfx
Don't believe that Rendition can match 3dfx. It can't

Note that a Nascar 2 3dfx patch is due out around Xmas time.

Also Papyrus is switching to 3dfx glide for Next years upcoming
titles Grand Prix Legends and Nascar 3

Take a look at Ubisofts 3dfx Glide implementation of their F1
racing simulation, also check out the 3dfx only implementation
of NFS2 SE. Then tell me you want a Rendition !!!

To be fair, the new Rendition cards do offer bang for the buck
and really should be considered seriously, but 3dfx challengers
they are not.

Cheers

No further involvment in CART - first bad move
No native Voodoo support - second bad move

Hopefully we will at least get the Nascar2 3Dfx patch...

Well I finally decided and went with the Intergragh Intense 3d  ($99 !!!
) . I had heard about some potential compatibility problems with the new
2100 chipsets and 3dfx add on cards so I went with the old 1000 chipset
instead . I was pleasantly surprised to find that even in win95 the
Intense is faster ( well...1.5 fps  according to cbench ) than my old
Matrox " Mistake ' 4meg as I had heard that Win95 performance " suffered
" with the older rendition cards...and ICR2 is fantastic now !!!!! Just
one small problem when quitting ICR2 and exiting MS-DOS mode computer
locks on win95 desktop with no icons and I have to Ctrl + Alt + Del to
restart .
Thanks to all who have shared their opinions pro and con about
rendition cards and  to
groups like "the Simproject " who keep ICR2 young and fresh with cool
enhancements... and to those of you who said I was mistaken for not
going 3dfx don't worry I will be getting an add on card soon so I'll
have the best of both worlds...Bless you all !!!!

Long live ICR2 !!!!......and  Marc ( Simproject )....hope to see that
GTP dashboard soon !!!
