Best Rendition Card?

Best Rendition Card?

by Nathan Wo » Wed, 27 May 1998 04:00:00

G'Day all,

While I'm happy with my 3Dfx card (even if its a Voodoo Rush), I'm
looking to buy my dad a computer and network them.

Now when it comes to a video card, I don't want to have 2 3Dfx cards,
I would like to spread the bias around a little, and thought of the
Rendition 2X00 series.

I'm currently tossing up between a Diamond Stealth II s220, and a
Hercules Thriller 3D. Is the extra money and 4MB worth it on the
Thriller? Is Rendition GPL really that much nicer (yes, thats one of
my reasons for getting a Rendition in this comp).
Do they both do Direct 3D okay for things like TOCA?

FWIW, I'm getting a Voodoo 2 later on for my own computer...

Best Rendition Card?

Nathan,

I would recommend the 4 Meg or 8 Meg Hercules Thriller 3D.  And that is a
DEFINITE YES that the Rendition or the 3DFX version of GPL is MUCH, MUCH
better than the non-accelerated version of GPL, no comparison!

I personally have the 4 MEG Thriller and a new Monster II Voodoo 2 12 Meg
board.  I must say that the Rendition version is a little better than the
3DFX version in my opinion.  The colors are nicer, and they both get a
great frame rate on my PII 266.

Regards,

Todd

 Nathan,
I have the 8meg Thriller 3D AGP card and the Rendition version of GPL
is visually much better than the 3dfx version. The Rendition mode
supports anti-aliasing (no jaggies) and at 800x600 is a sight to behold.
I have no idea what the frame rate is, and could care less for that
matter. It's obviously pretty darn fast. I was running the GPL demo in
3dfx mode and then bought my Thriller just for GPL. With the new card in
the sim was so much smoother that my lap times dropped a couple of
seconds just because of the finer sense of speed and control. I'm more
than happy with mine. Of course, it's also nice to have the best of both
worlds, being able to run Rendition or 3dfx apps. All the best, Mike

Mike,

Is there a big diff between the 4mb Thriller and 8mb?
At the moment, I am looking at PCI, but I would assume performance
diffs would be negligible compared to AGP.....

I've read of instalation difficulties with the Thriller, and are there
any probs with obtaining drivers? (I had to wait a while for new
Hercules Stingray drivers)

Agreed. I have Stealth II and Monster 3D. For GPL, rendition mode is much
nicer at 800x600.
