Cyrix explained

I am one of the many people who found out that N2 will not run on a
Cyrix 6x86.  When I contacted Cyrix tech support, they sent me this:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The algorithm used in Windows 95 to detect the CPU was completed before
the Cyrix 686 was released and therefore the Cyrix 686 responds to the
algorithm just as a 486 does. To verify that your system is using the
6x86 microprocessor, please reference your computers BIOS startup
screen.
In addition, the following software utilities identify the 6x86 CPU
correctly: Diagsoft QA Factory 6.02 and QA Plus/FE 5.42; Quarterdeck
Manifest 4.01; and PC   Doctor Rev 1.5.162 from Watergate Software.
Cyrix
will update this site with new software utilities that can detect a
6x86
CPU in the future. Please note that the 6x86 processor was certified
by
Microsoft for Windows 95, and Windows 95 performance results are
  available

Windows 95 has over come this Id problem in their Service Pack 2.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So if you have a Cyrix, just find Service Pack 2 !!

Easier said than done.  At the present time there is no Service Pack 2.
The closest thing to it (probably what they were referring to) is the Win95
Service Release 2 that is starting to ship with some new systems.  It comes
with the much anticipated FAT32, but unfortunately Microsoft has no plans
to allow upgrades of older versions of Win95.

I have the new win95 on this P166+ system here ( windows 95 4.00.950 B
) . It IDs the CPU as a "CyrixInstead" just like NT does. I don't
think that'll help at all with Papyrus programs though, cept maybe for
icr2 for win95, which worked in the first place, but i havnt tried
yet. Maybe the install program won't complain now.... :-)

This is great, but this is a DOS based game, so it doesn't matter what Win95 says. Win95 lies
all the time anyway.

Papyrus will have to change the way they detect the CPU during install, or when running games.

I have a cyrix 686p150+,is there anyway of getting the nascar2 demo
to run?I read all the posts, and know they will probably fix the problem
on the full game;but I would really like to get the demo running first.
Where do I get service pack2 and how do I use it,any help would be
great! Also read many complaints about CYRIX,really hope the chips arn't
as bad as everyone says.

Is there anyway to get the nascar2 demo working with the Cyrix 6x86

Thanks.

someone should hack out the cpu check just like they hack the copy
protection.

The problem, unfortunantly, isn't with a check of the cpu, it's in the
program code itself. That's why the menus work great but you can't
race in the demo. There are several ways to trick a system with a 686
into thinking its got a pentium, none have any effect on the nascar
demo letting you race. In fact, they hang the dadburn thing at the
papyrus logo and you don't even see the menus.

It won't help if you use the OSR2 ( Original Service Replacement 2), it will
only tell it is a, "CyrixInstead" cpu. Got it??

I guess I should have bought a pentium!Isn`t the 6x86 Cyrix 100%
compatible? At least this is what I was told, really wish I could take
back the crappy chip and get a pentium! There must be a patch or
something for dos mode, kind of reaching I guess but what the hell this
makes me mad!If there`s any new news please e-mail me at:

The service pack will not fix your problem. This is a DOS game. This means the game does not
need Windows to run. No Windows, no service pack, nothing.. So if a game does not use WIndows,
how is  a Windows Service Pack going to fix a problem??

And no, there is no way to get the demo to run, except to put an Intel Pentium in your PC.

the cyrix 6x86 is NOT 100% pentium compatible.
they claim it to be, but so did all those SoundBlaster-clone cards back
in the days.. and those only worked depending on the phase of the moon.

there's more to the pentium chip than just being a faster 486.

If I remember correctly, Ad Levesque stated in this group that the
Cyrix bug has already been fixed, and there would be no patch to the
demo.

From the quotes from Sierra which were posted here, the problem is only
a matter of chip identification, and a patch will be released soon.

Other than the chip identification issue -- the Cyrix responding with
"CyrixInstead" instead of "IntelInside" -- I have not heard of any
proven incompatibility between the two chips.

You can take consolation in the fact that, when the patch becomes
available, your Cyrix will run ICR2 faster than a comparable Pentium.
It is, after all, not Quake.

Yes, that would make sense.
