GPL and AMD 3DNow!

by Tero Turtiain » Thu, 11 Mar 1999 04:00:00

Hi!

I wonder if Grand Prix Legends currently supports the 3DNow! instructions of
the AMD K6-2 and K6-III processors? I have understood that with 3DNow!-
optimizations you can get significant improvements in the performance of
3d-games. At least at the moment GPL is not listed in the www-page for
3DNow!-optimized products, http://www.racesimcentral.net/
Viper Racing from Sierra is there :)

So are there any plans for 3DNow! support for GPL??

I'm running a K6-2/350.  This machine is quite fast. But, I'd have to say that
for GPL your best bet is still the Intel PII.

With 128 meg ram, 12 meg V.D.2 card, 8 meg sound card, I can only get 36fps
with almost everything off while online.  With a PII I heard that online you could
have a lot of stuff on.

I'd go for the K6-2 for the price. But if you have the money I'd get a PII in a
hart beet.

GPL and AMD 3DNow!

36.95 FPS is the design limit for GPL. You will never greater than this.
The key is the FPS when running with a full field of AI cars. The AI cars
require tremendous amounts of CPU power not graphics power.  The CPU is
tracking the same parameters for the AI cars as yours - thats why the frame
rate appears to decrease dramatically when the number of AI cars is
increased. The graphics card is not independant of the CPU and requires
clock cycles. If the CPU is busy tracking AI info then the graphics system
suffers. Thats why the Pentium 2 with it's large on chip cache works so
well. This is also why most people, even with older systems, get fairly good
frame rates in practice sessions (no AI cars).

Hehehehehe, 36fps is the limit to make the FPS work correctly with the
physics model.  Thats why the car isnt as fast at lower FPS because the
physics is not performing how it should be.

Unfortunately it does not.Too bad cuz it already rocks on my AMD.It would be great
if they ever did.I cant remember where and who said it....but someone posted a
message saying there was a patch 1.1 for GPL.I went looking for it yesterday but it
was not to be found....happy racing~!!

I know what ya mean...I started racing at Watkins Glen and I use full on
everything and for the first time my game began to flutter. But as far as cache
goes, does the cache on a K6-2 (64k if im correct) not larger than the
P2's?(32k).....where the Intel
shines over the AMD in this case,is that it performs better Floating point
calculations than it's AMD counterpart.So if GPL were 3dNOW enhanced(and i doubt
that it ever will, which is a shame)then it would kick the Intel's ass in
performance.I still get good frame-rates at Watkins-Glen,,,,it's just when i
round the final corner that it flutters a bit then once past all those fancy
graphics it's ok again.

Well, currently I have no problems with GPL with my AMD K6-2/333Mhz, it runs
most of the time above 30 fps, usually at 36fps. But I would like to try
online racing and I have understood that it eats some of your processor
power...

BTW... Any novice Finnish online leagues for GPL? :-)

Tero,

I run GPL on my K6-2/350 with 3Dnow and I get 36fps (Voodoo l) with
most graphics and just cars in the mirrors. GPl doesn't use the 3Dnow.
Nothing has been mentioned about it for the up coming patch, which is
supposed to solve many of the online issues.

well im stuck with a crummy USR 56k winmodem which i hear is ***for on-line
racing.....but soon our cable company is re-wiring our neighbourhood for cable
modems....then it will be much much better and i cant wait.
