Another Richard Burns Rally question

Hi folks,

I received my copy of RBR from amazon today. Sadly I did not notice
it's a DVD while my *** PC only has a run of the mill CD-ROM drive
(and Amazon's box cover shot clearly states PC CD-ROM).

Before I rush out and buy a DVD drive just for RBR, I'd like to know
if W2K / WinXP is actually required. The operating system is not
listed in "minimal requirements", but "Recommended Requirements" on
SCI's website clearly states "Win2000 / windows xp".

Can someone please confirm that RBR runs under 98SE and friends?

Thanks in advance, uwe

Hi folks,

someone over in the RSCnet forums confirmed that RBR works fine on
98SE. Good design decision by warthog if you ask me ;-> Too bad they
don't list it on the box.

Cheers,

uwe

Hmm, looks like I have to rain on my own parade here (am I talking to
myself, I wonder? ;-) Installation went fine, but RBR crashes upon
startup using various gfx settings (both with the original and the
no-cd version from gcw):

Hi Jurjen,

it's DX9.0b on a GF ti4 4800 which should support pixel shading. I did
a test-install on my son's 98se ti 4200 machine, and it appears to
work fine (at least it doesn't crash with an illegal instruction)

I have no idea what might be causing this. I upgraded to the latest
and greatest nv drivers, but the problem persists. Maybe SCi's tech
support can help.

cheers & thanks for your reply,

uwe

Hmm - bit weird - but I've seen such sort of exception notifications
with Win98 before with all kind of progs.

I'd say you're Win98 install is due .. maybe a fresh install of win98
will cure the problem (hate this kind of solution but hey - it's the
most common advice with MS software :-)

cheers jurjen

PS: You will find - what ever it takes to run RBR it's gonna be worth
it :D

What's your soundcard, and what soundcard has your son's PC got? Just a
thought.

Hi guys,

first of all thanks very much for all the suggestions to help me get
RBR to run on my system. I'd hate to re-install or upgrade as this
machine as been ticking along without so much as a hitch for nearly
two years now. I'm not much of an installer / de-installer type, so
it's a rather "clean" win98se system (or as clean as they tend to get
;-) which boots in seconds rather than minutes with only explorer and
systray running.

It's a Soundblaster Live! Value PCI which has worked ok in all other
titles I run regularly (gpl, f1c/mods, n2003/mods, GTR demo, lfs, rt,
even q3a ;-), my son's machine uses the onboard sound chip on a ASROCK
k7a I believe.

The TSW wheel is connected to the SB Live!'s game port if that
matters.

I wrote email to scitech support, maybe they can come up with
something. It would be great to be able to at least give RBR a spin
before I send it back or sell it. However what I've read in the RSC
forums about TSW2 and split axis support I have a feeling that there's
another obstacle to be overcome with my wheel / pedal setup before
I'll be able to drive a modern rally car ;-)

Cheers & thanks much again for your help,

uwe
