Hello everyone,

i downloaded the new toca racedriver demo yesterday and this is what i think
of it:

Testmachine: Athlon 2800+ geforce ti4400, 512 mb ddr, microsoft wheel

The menu still looks the same as in the last 2 demos, it is arcadisch but
good. I first had to setup
the controls and i activated the sim bonuscheat in the bonus menu.

First you will see a short movie, in which you get offered a testdrive on
Monza. When the action starts, first
thing i noticed were the absolute fantastic graphics !! They are just
amazing, it runs Very very well on my system,
it looks 100 times better than f1 2002 and there is even motion blur . The
feeling of speed is the best i ever saw in
a racing game. Even much much better than nascar season 2003.

The handling of the car is better than in the first 2 demos but still very
arcadish., But that was also the case in Toca 2, and
still it was a great game. When you are driving a game like nascar 2002 or
Grandprix legends, you know what the car will
do when you make a mistake. You know from experience . Unfortunately the
handling is not at all realistic in this game, so
you dont get the idea of having it totally in control. When you make the
handling more realistisc it will make the game easier
instead of more difficult.

The sound is good, but not great. The damage is also really arcadisch, but
looks great.

The tracks are not accurate at all. I think they changed the tracks slightly
to make them easier to drive.

I could not find any replay options in the demo and you have to setup your
controls everytime when you start the game.

Conclussion:
Graphics: 10
Sound:  7
Handling: 6
Total: 8

If they will improve the handling of the car, it will be a great game. It
will not be a grandprix legends or nascar 2003 but in graphics,
number of tracks and cars it will be the best game on the market. If you can
get used to the handling of the cars it will be a fun game to play.

: Conclussion:
: Graphics: 10
: Sound:  7
: Handling: 6
: Total: 8

Graphics - I'd say 9. Very good - but not perfect - car textures are a bit
low res.
Tracks - 3.  VERY VERY un accurate. Worse than any F12002 track.
Sound - 5 - Nothin special at all
Handling.- 2.  No relation between what you do with the wheel and what the
car does. Protons dont stop that fast ( braking at the 50 metre board for T1
monza ). Just totally ***y WIERD.
Controller Setup - 2. No dual controls ( had to use Momo pedals eughghghg)

Average.   4.2

I dont know who this title is aimed at. It's not the racing fan - it doesnt
do racing well enough. It's not the RPG fan - they wont like the racing.
They're officially dropped a clanger here

OK Doug, you are probably right:

Graphics: 9
Sound: 6 (not bad, but not special at all)
Handling: 5 (at least you can not suddenly loose the car like in that
swedisch touringcar game )
Tracks: 5

I'd put STCC and STCC 2's phsyics an order of magnitude above this effort -
I really would.  And STCC(2)'s wasnt great.

Oh dear oh dear - so much potential for a cracking fun product here - but
they missed the boat

shame cant just add touring cars into gpl !!!

anyway i found toca race driver Rubish !
and why would a company release an 80% completed demo that drives like
shit! ( this would hurt them more than help them ! ( in my opinion )
Sorry but codemasters do not know how to make a racing game. Toca was
***and so will this be from the demo.
Time to go back to V8 Challenge.

I just received an email from Codemasters with a link to a new US demo with
a test drive at Brands and a race at Sears Point. Downloading it now.

Did you try this?

"Simulation mode provides a more physically accurate mechanics model. This
can be enabled by entering the bonus code 'SIM' on the bonus screen. This is
not recommended for digital controllers, for example the keyboard, as they
do not provide the subtlety required to be able to control the car well.
This bonus code has no effect for wheel controllers, as it is permanently
enabled in that case."

I tried the sim code.  Looked like it was probably handling realistically,
but I couldn't tell because it took whole seconds to respond to any steering
input.  And this despite getting a decent appearing frame rate.  Something
is wrong here.

Just tried to download it.

Hm.  I gotta register and give 'em a valid email address to download a
*DEMO*?!??   Codemasters can suck me sideways.

Something is absolutely wrong with this game; it feels dead and unresponsive
with good fps and a MOMO wheel.  I think the biggest problem is center of
the car pivot (I did the old donut spins and couldn't get the car to rotate
about the front wheel, it spun from the center).

Looks great if they just add a driving component to the cut scenes and eye
candy. ;0)

I had exactly the opposite reaction.  With my MOMO the car was entirely
too responsive.  Every movement of the wheel sends me across the track.
It's like I'm driving on the sticky side of duct tape.  I enjoyed the
Toca 2 and was expecting more of the same from this (with cut scenes),
but something went horribly wrong.
