TOCA Impressions Needed

Hi all,

I have just downloaded the TOCA demo and like what I see in the way of
reasonable frame rate and game play. The demo seems very arcadish which is
ok in way.

What I need to know before I buy the full version is how many tracks, what
setup can you perform on the car, is there championship modes, in
championship mode do you have practice & qual and is there several race
heats on race day as there is in real life.

In summary, is the TOCA championship simulated and how hard is it to win.

Thanking you all in advance.

9 - Donington GP, Donington Short, Silverstone, Thruxton, Brands Hatch
Short, Oulton Park Short, Croft, Knockhill, Snetterton.

None

Yes, two types Short (average race duration 8minutes) or Long (average
race duration 25 mins)

No Practice although you can use the Time Trial facility to practice
"unlocked" tracks. Each Round consists of 2 races and there is a 3 lap
free qualifying session for each race.

Two races per race day. not really heats as such as they are both full
points scoring races in their own right. Weather conditions vary from
track to track from sunny through cloudy, rain (nice rain effects),
storm (rain and lightning), snow (nice snow effects).

Fairly close. 24 races in total (12 rounds as Brands, Silverstone and
Thruxton are visited twice). There are three difficulty levels. To win
the championship on the hardest difficulty level would require a near
flawless performance.

I'm hooked on TOCA but I guess a wish list of additions would be car
setup options (without compromising the accesibility of the game as it
stands), camera replays, realistic damage options, save game facility
between 2 rounds at the same venue, more circuits by using the same
engine to duplicate international Touring Car series.  I'd be very happy
if they just gave us the Mt Panorama circuit here in Australia and let us
run an endurance race on it. It's a great circuit and an endurance race
would be quite a test.

Codemasters have done good with TOCA, maybe the patch will give us even
more good stuff !

The guys at The Pits have put together a patch for Nascar2 that converts the
big American V-8 Winston Cup cars into Nimble little 2.0 litre Touring Cars.
The patch uses the road courses that have been converted to N2 from ICR2.  One
of the items that I have bugged the creators for is the Mt. Panorama course.
That would be awesome.  As far as which cars are covered, there are BTCC, DTC,
NATCC and OZtcc.  About 18 different markes and more current paintjobs and
drivers than you can shake a stick at.
Check out the USPITS and see what they've done with N2.

Thanks for the tip, I'll check it out (and start hassling them for Mt Pan
!).

(lots of good stuff snipped)

Agree to your wishes and comments, Nick.
My other "requests" are:

1) When spinning the car stops too quickly. 140-0 in 2 sec. On the grass
it behaves pretty lifelike.
2) AI needs improvement. I have spent about 5 hrs in total on TOCA, and
can outrun the AI easily (In the races, anyway, set at "hard") at most
tracks. Besides, they mess about too much:))
3) Give us an option a la NASCAR/GP2 etc to set more sound options, i.e
less tire squeal, louder engine noise.
4) Local yellows & black flags would be a dream.
5) Pits!! Well, I guess that's coming up..

I'm getting used to the bouncing around bit now, and I am enjoying it
madly!! It gives you are more precise feel of the speed.
The standard complaint: Whenever it crashes (has happened about 10
times) I suddenly find myself workin' my T2 in windows. I liked the
messed up code on the screen better! Aw, well, at least there's no need
to reboot:))

Matt

Hey, with the number of times I spin, I like that fact that it stops
quick <g>

Yup, I'd agree with that. I like the levels of difficulty that they have
now but I can see tht with a bit more practice, I'd probably be looking
for a couple of "even harder" difficulty levels.

Very good point. Without a rear vision mirror, flicking to full screen
rearward view is very unsettling as you're pounding into a corner, a
waved blue flag would let you know that things are about to get painful.

First time I ran Brands Hatch in the Renault, I thought that I'd never
get used to it but I'm getting there (switched to the Peugeot which has a
smoother ride to get used the layout then switched back to the Renault to
turn the fast laps).

TOCA hasn't crashed on me once yet (although I've crashed in it several
hundred times already) !

What tracks and cars really get your *** flowing? For me, Croft in the
Honda or Renault is a real buzz and on the downside, I'm still not
turning the the laps I'd like to at Brands (which is one of the few of
these tracks I've driven in real life !).

I like Oulton... I was there last year when they used the long circuit
(and Burt crashed),  and finally going around there in the game is a
buzz. And if you want you can drive the long circuit.
