Grand Prix - The Movie

Hello,

Grand Prix, the 1966 movie starring James Garner, is on this Sunday on
Speed Vision. I'm told it shows all the tracks. Anyone that likes GPL
might want to tape it.

Unfortunately it doesn't show *all* the circuits.
Monaco is heavily represented but the others (Monza, Clermont-Ferrand)
are simply "backgrounds".

Gentlemen,

In the movie "Grand Prix", lest you forget, there was some wonderful footage of
the vintage circuit at Spa (which, if I remember correctly, served as the
impetus for GPL).  Then, the race season finale offerred fantastic shots of the
entire circuit at Monza, including the oval which had not actually been used
for an official Grand Prix in many years.

Also, in one sequence, we see Gran Prix de Mexico replays on a movie screen
while 'Pete Aaron' is being roundly chastised by Mr. Yamura for general
complacency.

Even though filming for the movie included  Watkins Glen and Mosport as well,
these were left on the cutting room floor to shorten the film.  It would be
truely remarkable if someone in attendance that day would have had the
foresight to pickup and store those vintage feet of film.  Oh, what a wonderful
remake we could see.

Scott.

Hey Bruce,

You've forgottten all about the part at Spa were the Ferrari driver crashes
into a shed(?)
And at the Glen Gardner's car cathes fire !

btw The screenshots at Allisons page show the part of Monaco-track at which
Ascari flew into the ocean :-)
(I think they do that in"Grand Prix" too)

cheers,

Bart

You know, it honestly wouldn't surprise me if John Frankenheim
(director/producer of the film) didnt' have a "director's cut" of the
film, or even James Garner, who became a huge fan and a part time
driver after filming.

John is a client of my photo lab here in Los Angeles. He tells me that all that
extra footage is lost and that he doesn't even have a print of the film! He
says he has been approached about a sequel, but talk is cheap here in
Hollywierd and that he hasn't seen a decent script yet.

BTW, I saw Eve Marie Saint a few years ago on Letterman and she wouldn't even
talk about the film! She hates motor racing and thought it was a horrible
experience. Sheesh....

It's a wonderful film, but I also find it quite upsetting that they
chose to ignore the 'ring completely. Perhaps they'd already exceeded
their crash budget!

Cheers!

Just to add to JB's message,

Speedvision's presentation of the movie "Grand Prix" will commence at 7:00pm
Eastern Standard Time (-5GMT). The movie is a MUST-SEE, and will be in
LETTERBOX format.. so nothing will be "cut" from the edges (I've got the
full-screen video.. so I'll be taping this one!). There will be feature
interviews with the producers of the movie, and exclusive footage of the
making of the movie (from what I hear). The presentation will be FOUR HOURS
LONG... so make sure you have your VCR set to EXTENDED PLAY....

If you've still got any room left on your tape, make sure you also catch the
following:
Mon. 14th 6pm (EST) - Legends of Motorsport: "Nine Days in Summer" - Part 1
Tue. 14th 6pm (EST) - Legends of Motorsport: "Nine Days in Summer" - Part 2

These will also be repeated at 3am (Tuesday morning, and Wednesday morning)
if you didn't catch it the first time..

I haven't seen "Nine Days in Summer", but from what I hear, it is a
MUST-SEE.. with footage from the 1967 Grand Prix Season.

** Also mark down the following dates **:
Thu. 24th 6pm (EST) - Legends of Motorsport: "The Ringmasters 1967"
Fri. 25th 6pm (EST) - Legends of Motorsport: "Lap of the Gods"

The first is suposedly a documentary of the (in)famous Nurburgring
Nordschleife.. all I can say is WOW !! this track was amazing - all 20+
miles of it!!
.. The second features an in-car look at a lap around some of the most
famous Grand Prix tracks.. again.. all I can say is WOW!!

Looks like my VCR is going to be VERY busy in the next two weeks!!!

Could somebody who taped this PLEASE contact me?  I've got two
letterboxed copies of the film already, but I would love to see the
behind the scenes footage and interviews.  Thanks!!

You mean there were WOMEN in that movie.  I FF through all the non-racing
moments.  Nothing like a bunch of useless dialogue and bad acting to mess up a
perfectly cool racing flick!

Actually the story and acting were not bad.
What *WAS* corny was the real GP drivers trying to act!!

Did you notice the burn on James Garner's neck at the end of the movie?
I bet that was real, from the flame scene at the Glen (I think).  Now
there was an *actor* who wasn't afraid to race!

Hey, I'll gladly sit through a little dialogue just to get a look at the
totally cool Francoise Hardy! Yum!

My favorite bit of dialogue in the film is the drivers meeting before Spa when
all the drivers are ***ing about the track conditions and what could happen
if it rains. How many real F1 pilots can you pick out of the crowd?

Yes it was Brands Hatch, James definately got a face full o' flame in that
scene.

I liked his story in the Speedvision presentation about how Lloyd's of London
pulled his insurance especially after they got wind of that scene.
