Originally released in 1966, "Grand Prix" really does capture the
glamour era of F1. It won 3 Academy awards and has some of the best
racing footage I have ever seen on film(much more authentic than Days
of Thunder). It is 3 hours long and follows fictional drivers thru a
full season of F1. Some of it gets a little cheesy, but overall it is
well worth a rent, or a buy. After watching this movie, I can't wait
to drive Grand Prix Legends against the likes of Jimmy Clark, Graham
Hill, Jackie Stewart, and Dan Gurney. I hope there is banking at
Monza.

I loved the bit where the Ferrari fell through the tree at Monza and
deposited the driver in the tree, after that he died - it's funny, but
is that true to life?

For the best racing footage of all time, you have to watch Steve
McQueen in LeMans.  Not much of a story line or dialogue but lots of
authentic racing action.

Amen.  Whenever I think of fast cars or racing, I can't help but think
of McQueen and LeMans and Bullet.  I really miss that guy.

I don't think there will be banking at Monza if it is based on the '67
season (as seems likely). The track was in a similar configuration to
the one used today, although without the chicanes.

I don't think that's particularly funny, but it is sorta true to life.
The inspiration for this incident in the film probably comes from the
death of the Ferrari driver Wolfgang von Trips in the (I think) 1961
race at Monza. von Trips was leading the championship when he crashed
out at the Parabolica corner (on the flat circuit), killing himself
and several spectators. Phil Hill went on to win the championship as a
result, just like Garner's character in the movie

Pretty close, Tom.  there was a Ferrari driver killed at that curve when
his car went over the embankment.  Whether he actually flew out of it and
through a tree, I don't know.

Von Trips got tangled up with Jim Clarke, and did a bunch of end over
ends into the crowd.  It was not unusual for drivers to be thrown from
the car at all. Nomex didn't come along until like the middle of '68.

As I recall, there was also a driver to go out of the banking, and be
killed, just like the Yves Montland character in the film.  For the
life of me, I cannot remember the drivers name.  If I recall
correctly, it was similar to that of the character Montland played in
the film.
But I could be mistaken.

Question is, are we getting the banking in the sim?
I checked a couple of books at home, and one of em, RennSport, the
annual, shows the banking and the rest of the track on the track map, as
if they ran both in '67.  I was also thrilled to see the 14.2 mi fill
Nurburgring was one of the 11 tracks in '67.

In 67 Monza had no more banking. The track looked similiar to the one we have today. But there should be the old long Nurburgring in the sim. I wonder how Papy will manage this.

Nope, no banking in the sim if it is true to the '67 championship. The
track used in 67 was almost identical to the one used today with the
exception of all those annoying little chicanes! As a result, it still
holds the record for the fastest (highest average speed) GP ever run
(early 1970s race, I forget which year). On the subject of tracks, the
great thing is that it should also include a 14km Spa-Francorchamps, a
flat-out version of Silverstone, and Mosport in Canada (apparently a
terrifyingly good track according to some Canadian friends of mine)

Corner Two at Mosport is often [and rightfully] listed amongst the
top-ten most challenging turns in the world, along with other
favourites like Eau-Rouge at Spa and The CorkScrew at Laguna Seca.

Yep Mosport IS a really great track.  But F1 went out of there (AFAIK)
because it was not safe.  So they went to Mt-Tremblant after (F1) which
wasn't safe so now it's at Montreal (Circuit Gilles Villeneuve).  And
also I have two 1966 books.  And there are awesome.  One is from
Giancarlo Baghetti (a great driver) and the other is from Piero Taruffi
AND Juan Manuel Fangio (!!!!!).  And there is some great pics of 1966
cars (close of the 67 cars).  But there is also track maps.  Here is
some that are maybe in the 1967 season.  Sebring, Silverstone (the REAL
track), Buenos Aires (like F1 this week), Aintree, Nurburgring
(22,810km), Zandvoort, Spa-Francorchamps (14,120km), Monte-Carlo, Imola,
Monza, etc.  AFAIK also there is the Country of each F1 race in the
book.  If you know the track please reply.  Monaco, Belgium, France,
England, Holland, Germany, Italy, USA, Mexico.  In England I don't what
race:  Crystal Palace, Brands Hatch or Silverstone.  Maybe if I find a
scanner I will post some pics in alt.binaries.simulators.autos.  Monza
and Nurbuburgring pics are great.  Thanks a lot,

Are you sure it's turn 2 at Mosport and not the turn 5/Moss complex?  Or is turn 2 one where the track drops away from you as you're going around?
