The non-racing stuff gets old pretty quick but I could watch the
racing sequences over and over again and never get tired of it.

Anyhow, I'm sure there's lots of interview questions that haven't yet made
it to air, due to time constraints, and there is lots of additional footage,
such as Garner & Jacques Villeneuve driving around the Monza banking last
November -- Garner in an old F1 car, Villeneuve in his '99 Lucky Strike BAR
F1 car. Great stuff!
WOULDN'T IT BE ****FAN-TAS-TIC***** if Speedvision were able to get the
rights to put out a special Collector's Edition DVD:
'Speedvision Presents the Lost Drive-In:
"Grand Prix"-- the Movie'
featuring the movie in letterbox format, all the interviews with
Frankenheimer & Garner, possibly some "lost" footage that never made it to
production, and clips such as the Garner/Villeneuve piece at Monza. Hey,
they could even team up with Sierra & plug our beloved Grand Prix Legends
computer sim-- or better still, include a free copy of GPL along with the
DVD.
Hey, I wonder how many people might be interested in something like this--
perhaps we could start a petition and get Speedvision to look into it?!!

If they did, I'd place my order immediately. The wife had best not be in my
path to the phone. :-)

Didn't someone here already suggest that? Not to take anything away from you -
that's a great idea!

Sorry to sound like an idiot, but what is the letterbox version?
Marc
The widescreen version that shows the entire screen as seen in the theaters.
It has the black space at the top and bottom.

Thanks, I thought that was probably what it meant.

This film (along with "9 Days") was an extremely valuable resource for us
when we were developing GPL lo those many moons ago. Back then, there was
no widescreen VHS version available, so the LD was the only way of viewing
the racing scenes as Frankenheimer intended, i.e. in their original
widescreen glory.
MGM has a spotty track record when it comes to DVD. At times, they have done
excellent work (the new SE's of the Bond films), and at other times they've
done nothing but give us a barebones version taken from a tired old LD
master. I just hope that when the time comes to do GP, they don't give us
the latter. One encouraging sign is that the release of the film on
widescreen VHS indicates that MGM does care about the film to at least some
degree.
In the Lost Drive In interview with Frankenheimer, he mentioned that a lot
of footage wound up on the cutting room floor. Clearly, some footage was
shot in Mexico (only several seconds of black and white footage of Garner in
the Esses made it into the film) and in the opening credits, the producers
"thanked" Watkins Glen - so it seems like footage was shot there as well.
Unfortunately, it's highly unlikely that a lot of this stuff is still
*** around 34 years after the fact - but one never knows.
Come on MGM! We want the film remastered... we want 5.1 sound... we want
commentary tracks with Frankenheimer, Garner, and Phil Hill... we want all
the Lost Drive In footage and interviews... we want in-car footage from
Clermont-Ferrand (described as a "mini Nurburgring") so that Dave Noonan
and/or the GPLEA can work their magic on it... we want the stuff from Mexico
and the Glen... in short, we want it all.
Since GP is such a long film, I hope that MGM follows Fox's lead with Patton
and puts the film on 1 DVD and all the extra goodies on a second one (maybe
even a DVD-18!) Probably won't happen, but hey - I can dream, can't I?

The best line of the movie! :o)
