VROC and winmodem

Hello,

I've read a lot about throwing the winmodem out the window down on the highway
so a big truck can run over it if I am going to race on VROC.

I tried a race a few days ago, and i got during a race at monza 33-36 fps at
800x600 with full detail, and cars and track in mirror.

My system is a PIII 450, 128 MB ram and a CL V2 12 MB card.

I found this not to be bad at all, so the question is:

What impacts do the winmodem have on the system. Is it framerate hit or is it
latency hit?

I'm playing with a WinModem as well, and I didn't have any problems once
I installed a PDPI card and a SoundBlaster Live Value card.

My guess is that the biggest problem with the WinModem is long interrupt
latency, so as long as there are no other devices needing long
interrupts (eg. sound card and analogue joystick), it's actually OK.

My system is a P233 with 32mb, Voodoo Banshee at 1024x768 (but I do need
to turn the detail down low and have few trackside objects).

To be honest, you should do this whether or not you want to race on
VROC, period.

Yep the bottom line is win modems use the cpu for modem processing where as
non-winmodem modem's have all the circuitry for communications on them.
Sorta like a 2d card vs a 3d card.

my 2cents worth:
i understand the winmodem cant deal with the signal so it sends to the
cpu...even in micro-seconds its still a delay....what i have done to
help ( and since doing see no il-effects) is go into the modem
settings and zero the 2 buffer lines (a slide bar taht defaults to 16
on top and 14 on bottom) i know so little about this i dont even know
what top & bottom lines refer  to, but after sliding to left (zero)
there is no delay signal to cpu...

make any sense to you wiz-kids?

Here is a useful short description of what a winmodem is all about:
