Winmodem and VROC: impossible?

Winmodem and VROC: impossible?

by Joe Ree » Wed, 08 Sep 1999 04:00:00

If it's impossible, then I must have been dreaming for the last 10 months.

Up until 6 weeks ago, I was running a P166 with a 33.6 internal modem
and had no trouble running on VROC.  Of course it was pointless to
host, but I could join and run with little problem.  Now I'm using a
PII 400 with a 56K internal, and again, have few problems with
warping, disco's etc.  Sure, I'd love to have a cable modem,
but so far, my internal modem is serving me pretty well.  So I'd
say it's far from impossible.

Later,
Joe

You can have a good race with a winModem, but it must be configured for
racing online.  One winModem I had had a init. string in the manual to
keep the modem from using too much CPU.  look in your manual.  That is
really the one *** that destroys online racing with WinModems, the
CPU usage.

Winmodem and VROC: impossible?

Uh, just to make sure - just 'cause a modem's internal doesn't mean it's a
winmodem.  My GPL computer (PII350 at 466, Stealth II Rendition, 33.6
internal modem) has an internal modem - and it is a REAL modem.  It connects
to the internet noticeably faster as well.

Hmm, as far as I know internal modems do not have to be winmodems...

just a guess of course.

Winmodem and VROC: impossible?

Uwe,

I pretty much agree with you, as far as my experiences go.  I used to have
an internal, 56k WinModem.  I had little problem with it.  In fact, having
heard so much about how worthless for online racing WinModems were, I
swapped my Zoom modem, 56k, from my other machine and put it in the one I
normally use.  I saw no appreciable difference.

Now-- and the whole point of this post-- I have a Cable Modem.  And I can
say this much: they are much better than any 56k modem I've ever had.  :)
