When changing down I guess it should be the backfire sound that plays,
instead it sounds like the wheel hammer sound is playing.
Any idea where I went wrong?

It takes time, but it is worth it. Now I can hear the backfiring, but
without this one sound is so loud that other sounds vanish.

As it happens I'm pretty good at sound editing so I'll give it a go.
I'll post the results later

So far I've found that a reduction of 5dB in the GT_external_backfiring.wav
is about right for the Viper.
So I have made a set of files called GT_external_backfiring-xxdB.wav and
external_backfiring-xxdB.wav
GT_external being the new GT sound and the external_backfiring being the
original F1 sounds with the xx indicating the amount of attenuation I
applied.
To use them, If you are driving the 550 for example open the file
550sounds.sfx in the SeasonGT\Vehicles\ folder into notepad
and edit the line
VS_INSIDE_BACKFIRE=GT_external_backfiring-5dB.wav or
VS_INSIDE_BACKFIRE=external_backfiring-5dB.wav if you prefer the F1
backfire.
Restart the game and see what it sounds like, If it's too loud increase the
number of the file in the .sfx file or vice versa.
After that repeat with the other cars you want to drive
the sfx files are
SeasonGT\Vehicles\360Sounds.sfx
SeasonGT\Vehicles\550Sounds.sfx
SeasonGT\Vehicles\996Sounds.sfx
SeasonGT\Vehicles\GTSounds.sfx
SeasonGT\Vehicles\ListerSounds.sfx
SeasonGT\Vehicles\ViperSounds.sfx
Maybe we can come to some concensus and post the results here
I've put the zipped files at
http://www.btinternet.com/~the.solicitors/misc/gtsounds.zip
they need unzipping to F12001\Sounds\Car

I cut the sound, only using the second half, and reduced the volume to 50%.
That at least for me sounds better.
There's also an issue with momentary flanging where two sounds overlay each
other after shifting up (at least I think that's what causes it, I know
nothing about F1 2001 sound generation). This prob could probably be solved
by fine-tuning the pitch of the individual wav files to match perfectly. But
I'm too lazy to do that :-)
