GPL was unseen at E3?????

by Varmint2 » Mon, 08 Jun 1998 04:00:00

  That was me :-)

There wern't too many people interested in GPL at E3. That was how I was
able to get in my seat time. It was an un-impressive display compared to the
sound, light, and booth-bunny mega shows going on elsewhere.  It was also in
the less active side of the show.
The few people that did try it out had too hard a time getting the car to go
anywhere without falling off the track, and lost intrest almost immiadiatly.
The comment I herd most was that it had a z-axis and that allowed the car to
have better crashes. Nothing about more realistic handling and road feel.
I had better talk with Mark from 3DO about army men and HighHeat Baseball
than I did with Dave from Papy, and I diddn't have any special intrest in the
3DO titles, I just happened to be there.
They really wern't into hyping the papy stuff. I also found out that alot of
lists and things have to be bought into by the marketing dept. We always
suspect these things, but it hurts to actually hear it from a game producer.
I basicly came away from E3 with a really bad taste in my mouth for the
*** industry. I have not even fired up any games in the last week since
getting back. I was there seeing a friend who has been producing games since
the beginning of time. I don't think I would go to E3 again.
I was also dissapointed in lack of intrest in my orig***post by this
group. If the simmers here aren't e***d then how could the gamming press be
??

Well, Dave, now what did you really expect us to do, eh?  let off
fireworks and release balloons?

We've been slogging around Watkins-frickin-Glen for the past two months,
practising, practising, practising.....we have visited the Apex GPL site
for fast-laps and updated news items....we have seen comments that the
finished product will have just about every circuit we could wish
for....we have read that it may even be pushed back slightly...we have
'oohed' and 'aahed' over the physics of the cars in the demo....we have
even argued over what is real and what is not with regard to the
physics......and on and on etcetera ad nauseum.

In other words, Dave, we are just about 'e***d out' and the next
adrenaline rush will not occur until the product is released.

Don't concern yourself about the 'lack of e***ment', either here or at
E3.  Be more concerned about whether or not it will include a full
20-car field or only 8.

Bruce.

Geez,

If I would be disappointed after every unreplied post I wrote, I would already have
comitted suicide. I was really waiting for the follow-up but nothing came. So
there......, are you happy now?

I totally agree.  I love the GPL demo and cant wait for the game to come
out.  Its without a doubt its the best sim to come out since N2, and anyone
that says different is just ignorent or to impatient to learn to dirve the
sim.  But.........  I havnt played the demo in weeks, Im stuck at 1:07 and
not getting  any faster.  Everything that can be said about GPL has already
been said, several times!  If you havnt noticed updates have become pretty
scarce at The Apex, and whatever happened to the "Track of the Week" special
at OGR.com??  It hasnt been updated for a MONTH!  In my opinion the demo
might have been released a tad early, by the time the game is released there
wont be any surprises!
Im sure Trans-am won best sim because its something new!  I cant wait
for this to be released!

Hi Bruce,

While I'll agree that the pitstop was a 'rare' thing in the series,
the lack of an option kinda' kills it for us who wish to do a little
hacking on the side.

Nonetheless, I too am concerned for the field size...Imagine racing
on the 'Ring', only to find your nearest competitor (either direction)
in a few miles away!  =P

Lastly, I would like to see a solid multiplayer configuration.  Easy
to hookup, few drops, more than a dozen players, etc.  In other words,
smooth as a baby's...uh, something like MTM2.  Papy?  ;)

Cheers!

Marc

'No pitsops' I can live with, Marc.
It was not the norm to make pitstops back in that period:  the cars
invariably were designed to carry enough fuel for a GP-length race and
they didn't pit for tyres unless they had a problem.

No....I'm more concerned about the size of the fields that we will be
racing in.  I have this bad feeling that we are not going to have any
more than 8 or 9 A.I.competitors.  I am also disappointed that there
appears to be no Ferrari team.  Papyrus have said "two fantasy
cars"....perhaps one will be red (Ferrari) and the other blue (Cooper).

Mike L. allready announced eigh*** driver names
and negotiating with more.
So this means at least eigh*** cars in the field.
I wonder how many per team there will be,
Four teams announced allready + two fantasy makes six
This makes three cars per team sofar.

A Ferrari is available at the Apex site and there will also be a Honda

I can deliver a Alfa Romeo, now that's a fantasy team :-)

Ditto... though I'm hoping that the next adrenalin rush will be if/when a
new demo's released with either H2H play, AI, or both... or another track,
or... anything to keep the ball rolling! Things have gone a bit quiet
about GPL, mainly because I think most of us have pretty much got our lap
times at WG as low as we're likely to get them. Some of us will just
*never* make it into the 1:06/7's and have learned to live with it :-)

Of course if H2H play was enabled (just two player) I think by now we'd
have leagues, prizes, and Champions. They could even knock up a couple of
short oval tracks for us to race on (a sort of "Quake Deathmatch level"
for sudden death racing).

Andrew McP... 1:08.24 and proud of it (well, kind of ;-)

Eigh*** driver names does not necessarily mean 18 cars.
It simply means that we have a choice of whom our alter egos can be.

However, I hope you are correct, Hans!

Where did you hear this may be so?
The last think from Mike that I have seen was on the gamesonline interview
where he said that there would be a 20 car field that could be made up of
any combination of real or AI cars.

AFAIH (and i have this from a *reliable source*) we CAN do pitstops in GPL!!

I've been told (**IF I REMEMBER CORRECTLY**) that we can fix *minor* damage
and change a puntured tire etc...

Lets keep our hopes up!

As seen in the last interview (i.e. part 2) with Mike Lescault on
www.gamesmania.com more than 8 drivers will start the races. There is one
screenshot there taken from a start at Mexico and it clearly shows 10 cars
on the grid!!

Me too Bruce... me too !!
