GPL: How slow am I??

by Justin Dio » Mon, 08 Feb 1999 04:00:00

I only have the demo (Watkins Glen), but I asked REALLY nicely for the
full version for my b-day (27th).  I have been racing with the Brabahm
(it feels much more solid to me than the Eagle or Lotus) for a couple of
weeks now.  Once I could do 15-20 laps at 1:13.x-1:14.x in my AT car, I
moved up to the GP car.

I had to take all the camber out of it, b/c I couldn't keep it stable
(especially while running flat-out through that sweeping left hander on
the backstrech).  I also dropped the fuel to about 25 laps worth.  After
a couple of hours, I'm only running 1:10.x-1:11.x, but I can stay in
that range for a dozen laps or so consistently.  Am I so horribly slow
that the AI will run circles around me in the full game?? And do I
really need to put camber back in to be competitve??

Thanks for any advice,
Justin

Your not slow at all.  Ive had the full game for 3 months now and still only
manage 1:10 consistantly at watkins (this is in the BRM though...quite a bit
slower thanb the brabham).  My best is in the eagle at 1:07.54 but i cant do
that consistantly.  Against the AI your about a mid-fielder.  Dont get
discouraged though if you cant master all the tracks.  I still havent.  Ive got
Monza, Kyalami, Silverstone, Watkins(sorta) and Spa down but the rest are still
tricky to me.  The Nurburgring is just too hard.  It could take you a year to
get that track figured out.

As far as the camber goes...you definately need it.  Right now you only have
about half of the tire on the road which means about half the grip.  The ideal
camber setting lets all four wheel be flat on the track in a straight line.
Look at the tire temps to do this.  If the outside is too hot you need more
Negative camber.  If the inside is too hot you need more Positive camber.  Only
adjust these settings one (or in extreme cases 2 or 3) clicks at a time.

When you get the full version read the book "Four Wheel Drift" (aka Strategy
Guide).  The setup section is indespensible even to someone like me who
understands all that stuff in the setup screen.  And dont hesitate to ask if
you encounter a problem.  Most GPL drivers are willing to help newbies.

The name of the game in my opinion is the set-up, Once you get used to the
track and know what line to take it's just a matter of going faster
which is all in the set-up. Other peoples set-ups may suet you they may not
you'll have to alter it to your driving style.
although I don't drive the Brabham  106's are possible although the others
such as the ferrari and the lotus 104's are possible so I think all you need
is a set-up and you'll fly.

Try Allison Hine's site   Eagle Womans  Set-ups available there.
Have fun   Rick.
