Guys: I hope I'm not too late, but last saturday I found GPL at a bargain
price and decided to go for it (why the hell not? I said). Installed it,
upgraded it with the FF patch and guess what?
I'm sticking to this unbelievable sim for the next
I-don't-know-how-many-years!
I had never tried such a realistic and *** simulation, deprived from
useless arcadish bells & whistles.

The physics feel incredible (the only one that comes close to this is GP3
and MGPRS2 just feels like driving on jelly), the engine roar is scary to
say the least (especially the Ferrari's V12) and braking those ballerinas
down Nurburgring hills straights onto those hairpins pops sweat out of your
face.

everything on) using the Rendition driver on my modest system: Cel466,
V2200/Voodoo1. It's amazing the efficiency you get when graphic routines are
called directly from the hardware.

Strangely, the frame rate never goes above 15 fps using the 3Dfx driver and
sometimes the game even seems to freeze instantly, like it was running on
hickhops whatever resolution I choose. It's the first time I see this. So
far my good-old Voodoo had never let me down; even being an pre-historical
card, its Glide mode never ceased to surprise me...and now it did it for a
bad reason.
Does anyone have an explanation for this? Or is it normal?...

Sorry for the dated opinion, but somehow I felt I had to post my enthusiasm.

GPL was the first FF game I played (bought a LWFF just for this game).
After GPL you are spoiled any other game's FF are just
arcade/Playstation-type effects.

Why every game doesn't model the "car feel" to the extent that GPL does I
don't know...

Hello,

First off, I would strongly recommend turning *something* off :)  Even
with my P3/550, V5-5500 I have spetacular highlights off, detail level
from 0-10% (left side of bar) and only showing cars in the mirrors.  If
you get the George Smiley glide patch, you can make the mirrors refresh
every 2 frames which helps alot.  Your goal should be 36fps as that is
the limit set by GPL.

I'm still racing GPL after 2+ years :)  It's just darn good fun!

Jason.

I bought my LWFF just for GPL too!!  I guess I'm not the only one who's
computer hardware purchases are dictated primarily by papyrus :-)

Welcome to the wonderful world of GPL.  You should check out a small article
I wrote here http://www.slottweak.com/gplintro.htm .  It should get you
started.  You should also check out the excellent GPL forum at
http://www.legendscentral.com .  There have been nearly 10000 posts there in
the last 2 months.

Cheers

Phil

Yep, bought my LWFF for gpl too, and I'm holding onto the V5 vid card for
the same reason.

Thinking about my statement here... can anyone point me to a sim other than
GPL with the level of simulated "car feel" that GPL has?

I want a sim where I can feel the car moving around in corners, etc.

Yeah, GPL is definitely a "lifer."  I don't think this one will EVER get old
or boring.

Although the purists will scoff, I find the FF in NFS5 to be quite good. You
can certainly feel the front go light when the understeer sets in, and the
wheel "firms-up" again when you come off the power and the back starts to
come around.
I downloaded a savegame from somewhere that gives access to all the cars and
tracks in single player mode and I'm having a great time in my 1978 935

Yep, but what puzzles me is that the frame rate on the Rendition is almost
twice the figure I get on the Voodoo1 under the very same circumstances...
maybe the memory has something to do with it: the Voodoo has 4 Mb and the
Rendition has 8 Mb...

GPL was custom made for the rendition cards, and the second generation
redition card is also head and shoulders above the Voodoo1. Get a
Voodoo3 which should be very cheap these days and get a solid 36
fps. :) The CPU is certainly up for it.

Well...I'd risk GP3 (haven't tried F1RC though...) if you can live with the
chunky graphics; it has the extra benefit that it can be driven via the
keyboard like no other sim, included (heresy!) GPL. Of course the whole
thing turns upside down when you plug a FF wheel in...

Do you notice 'hickups' or pauses in NFS5 with FF on? If I have FF on
it causes the computer to pause for ever-so-short amounts of time when
a big impact is passed to the FF. I now run NFS5 with FF off. I do not
think I am asking too much of my P3-850, with GeForce2 32MB running at
1024*768 32 bit colour, or am I?

due to too many English classes/teachers)

What wheel do you have? No hickups with my LWFF, but I read the MSFF
is way more heavy on the cpu..
