NfS: Underground - No PU, more like pee-yew

Has anybody tried the NfS: Underground demo that's been floating around?
The graphics are spectacular (the sound is pretty good, too), even if the
tuner mods are about as tasteful as Liberace's last Eldo.  I was immediately
put off by the controller routines: impossible to select and calibrate, and
the steering-lag rates right up there with a curved-dash Oldsmobile.  The
physics model (or lack of it) is a complete joke; why is it that each
succesive iteration of the franchise (this is actually NfS7) is worse than
the one before?  That said, the game play is fun--if moronic--especially the
drag race (no quarter-mile here; it slices thru about a mile of downtown
traffic).  It owes more to 2Fast 2Furious than Gran Turismo 3...which is
probably a mistake.

Speaking of which, I see there's a book about it ("The Cars of Gran
Turismo") in the latest issue of the Motorbooks International catalog.  I
dunno abt. you, but I suspect there's more action in the book than any
racing game from EA.

Nice eye candy, shame they forgot about the gameplay and physics. NFS
used to be fun back in the day, but it is just turning into a crappy
arcade experience now.

Yep, it's a shame what has become of NFS. I remember seeing an article
about the original game in Road and Track a few months before it came
out (R/T sponsored the original in case you don't remember,) and I
couldn't wait til it came out. I preordered it as soon as I could and
once I got it, I was obsessed. The physics were excellent (for its time
-- 1995 or so?) the sounds were excellent, the car models were great.
The whole game was fantastic. NFS II was good but more arcadish, and
it's gone downhill from there. NFS:PU was a bright spot but the others
just haven't lived up to the standard set by the original.

well, the PC traditionally lacks arcade style games so this might fit the
bill for some people

I love the eye candy in this game the motion blur when using nitro's is
pretty spectacular :)

Don't get me wrong, I am not a sim snob, I am not averse to the
occasional arcade style game, but I didn't find anthing fun with this
demo.

Well i just tried the demo and I think its brilliant, reminds me alot
of the impression I had when I first loaded up Gran Turismo on the
PSX.

A racer with superb potential this one.

I never played the original GT, but as it was on a PSX maybe its a
fair comparison. Gameplay wise this demo is absolutely pathetic
compared to the likes of GTA3.

I love this Game!!!  I admit, The FnF movies got me hooked on street
racing and I love the nissan 350Z.  Personnally, I like the car
handling (may not be realistic) and the gameplay is going to be great
in the Final Version.  There is many modes such as Drag, Circuit,
Sprint and Drift, plus a storymode, car customization and online play.

This is a sim newsgroup, and while you may enjoy playing it, NFS:U
isn't remotely sim like. It doesn't even have good arcade style
physics IMO.

Well I resent being labelled an idiot for admiting to liking this game
by some snotty nosed sim racer.

IMO, it isn't a matter of whether it's a sim or an arcade racer, but whether
it does what it does well.  Again IMO, NfS:U doesn't.  As noted, the
steering response suffers from comatose lag: you turn the wheel and what
seems like eons later, the car responds.  That's just plain asinine.
Midtown Madness for the Xbox, for example, may not be any more serious than
an Abbott and Costello movie, but when you turn the wheel (or rather, nudge
the stubby joystick), the car turns.  No excuse.

Always remember, the moment you express an opinion here, you are open
season for Snipers.  If you would have qualified your appraisal, then you
might have gotten away unscathed.  Next time try this:

"While it's no GPL, there is enough fun factor to overlook the obvious
shortcommings."

There!  I should copyright that..:)  THe above line will protect you
from further snotty nosed respondants.
