   Thanks for the OS advice.

My PC is being reloaded from scratch.

Which driver do I want for my 5500?

The 3dfx.com site has 1.04.00, and 1.04.01 which is called a
beta.  1.04.00 is dated Nov. 9, 2000, 1.04.01 is Nov. 28, 2000.

Which one do I want?  Stability is important.  After 6 Months,
is 1.04.01 proven?   Or is there a better driver available on
some other site?

                                                        Thanks
                                                        Larry

I mail ordered my Voodoo 5500 the day before they released the 1.04.01
drivers (Nov 29, 2000). They have never given me trouble with any game or
application. They are universal drivers and work with the Voodoo 3000,4500 &
5500.

Other than implementing HSR in games like Elite Force and Quake III, I think
the 1.04.01 are pretty much the same as the 1.04.00 drivers. I have never
used anything other than the 1.04.01 and I am really happy. NEVER a problem.

Kinda weird. This is the first time I've bought a video card and have never
updated my drivers. To be truthful I don't see why i should as the 1.04.01
work perfectly with everything I throw at it. All games work flawlessly.

I play the following:

GPL (2x FSAA useable at 800x600 but I play with no FSAA and 1024x768)
Nascar 3 (4x FSAA works without a slowdown :) )
Nascar 4
Quake III
Half Life
Serious Sam
Nascar Heat
Rogue Spear
etc...etc...........

I own:
Asus P2B (ancient 440BX mobo-first one Asus made with BX chipset)
SB Live! Value
Voodoo 5500 AGP
192 MB RAM
Promise Ultra 66 controller

Yup same for me. Every game I have runs under them. Only TAW insists on crashing everytime I shut it
down for some unknown (to me) reason.

   Thanks for the input.

I'm sad that 3dfx is gone.

I suppose as more games start using new features of DX8
some shortcomings of these drivers might be exposed.  There
will be no one updating these drivers.

When that happens, it will be time to get a new card.

                                                  Thanks

Hi Bill

Your system is very similar to mine,

Voodoo5 5500
Abit BF6
SB live player
128 MB ram

What settings are you using for Nascar 4 with what results,
I'm running in Direct 3D at 640X480 16bit 4X FSAA (looks better than
1024X768 without FSAA IMO), car detail medium, world 1/3, draw ahead 45,
mirror 10, opponents ahead 12, behind 5, mirror obj. medium, trackside some,
smoke on (the smoke in N4 is too cool to turn off), EAX and 3D sound on, I
get high 20's to mid 40's in a race, just wondering your results.

Also in GPL I use George Smiley's glide patch to turn down the mirror
refresh
and can run at 800X600 4X FSAA, it looks awesome and runs at 36 99% of the
time
with a full field

There are DX8 compatible drivers for the 3dfx board,
however, you are correct in that 3dfx boards will not be able to use some of
the features of DX8.    If a programmer chose to make those new features  an
integral part of his game, then 3dfx owners would be screwed.
voodoo.source.com (bad memory I'm sorry can't remember the url) should
have Feburary dated drivers that are DX8 compatible.

Oops...Just replied to this, but wasn't watching and sent it to e-mail
instead of newsgroup.  Reposting just in case anyone else has this problem.
I had the same issue, but found that if you reload the game and select
Direct 3D instead of Glide, it works like a champ.  The patch was different
for both Glide and Direct 3D versions, and last I checked both patches were
still available at www.combatsim.com.  I have both patches however, so if
anyone needs them and can't find them I will e-mail them to you.  Good luck.

www.ntcompatible.com has some newer or possibly hacked Win2000 drivers for
V1,2,3,4 and even the Banshee.  Check them out if you run Win2K. Doesn't
hurt to download an alternate driver for the future.

I still own a V1, V3 and two Banshees and they are still holding their own.
Well OK, so the V1 is just too damn slow but Im keeping it around for J's
F-15 and LB2 just in case LOL.

F-15 and LB2 run just fine on a V3 or even a V5 in Glide...
No sense keeping old V1's for that :-)

Hey, Ill trade you your Voodoo 2 for a 16meg Banshee even steven.

See my web page at: http://www.racesimcentral.net/

You would have to take a leap of faith and mail me the puppy***though.  I
do have two DiamondMM Monster Fussion PCI cards here and Ill trade one for
any type of Voodoo2 card regardless of onboard memory amount.  It's up to
you.
