F1RS - new 3DFX drivers problem

by Phil » Mon, 22 Dec 1997 04:00:00

I've just installed the latest 3DFX Glide 2.43 driver set and now F1RS
won't recognise my 3DFX card ! I've tried to reinstall the game but it
still says that I don't have a 3DFX card installed and will only install
the game with Direct X drivers - and the new patch won't work now either !
All my other games work fine - in fact there was a tremendous improvement
with the frame rate on TOCA.

Any ideas ?

F1RS - new 3DFX drivers problem

by Geof » Mon, 22 Dec 1997 04:00:00

Hi

You didn't say whose 3dfx board/drivers you have ?
I had the same problem initially,  F1RS  couldn't see my Diamond Monster
3dfx card at all.
The problem was that I was using the latest reference driver I got from the
3dfx website.
I re-installed the latest specific Diamond Monster 3DFX drivers, works OK
now.

Awesome game,  hope you get it working Ok.

F1RS - new 3DFX drivers problem

Hi

It's an Orchid Righteous and I got the drivers from the Orchid site.

Strange thing is, I can hear the card clicking in as normal and the game
seems to run ok although I have not installed the 3dfx version of the game.
Could it be, unlike TOCA for example, this game doesn't differ much in 3dfx
or DirectX ? Or does DirectX still use the Orchid borad in some way and
that's what I'm hearing ?

Whatever, it's still a stunning game - Geoff Crammond must be crying in his
beer - how can GP3 beat this ? Better setup diagnostics perhaps, but
graphics - I just don't see how.

F1RS - new 3DFX drivers problem

Don't confuse DirectX and Direct3d. Direct3d is a subset of the
DirectX package of drivers and APIs (someone else could probably
explain it better than I). F1RS requires DirectX 5 for both
installations (D3D and 3Dfx). Since your R3d supports Direct3d in
addition to native Glide and OpenGL, the Direct3d installation of F1RS
will run on your R3d, but you won't get the same effects and possibly
performance as with the native 3dfx version.

One solution I saw for the 3dfx install problem was to reinstall the
original drivers that you got with your R3d. Then see if the install
program will recognize the 3dfx card. Once the install is done,
upgrade to your latest R3d drivers or 3dfx reference drivers.

Good luck.

F1RS may be a great game (well, it _is_ a great game!) but it is a
looooooong way from perfect. Given two minutes I could list any number
of things that could be added, quite apart from extensive improvements
that could be made to the driving model.

It's another step forward, but we're a long way from "The Ultimate
Sim".

Cheers!

Phil,

The latest Orchid drivers remove glide.dll from your windows system directory. Simply copy glide.dl_ back from the CD that came with your card and rename it glide.dll

When you run the install for F1rs your 3dfx card should then be recognised.

F1RS - new 3DFX drivers problem

Phil,

I missed the start of your thread and can't be bothered going back, but...

It's good that the card is clicking in DirectX, it means that Direct3d is
kicking in. (you may hear the card click in multiple times in some games
that is not a problem just the software playing with your card)

Direct3d of course works on 3dfx boards, quite well would be an
understatement, however I would recommend using the Glide version (ie native
3dfx) immediately cause it's just that much cooler (after trying it I think
you'll agree).

Hope this helps...

In regard to better graphics in a game, well I'm not sure about GP3 (at all)
but I think if you close your eyes for 6-12 months and then open them very
quickly...  don't let this take the shine of F1RS, it seriously sets a very
high standard for future games...

Merry Christmas All

kane

I have had the same problem and pinpointed it to the latest 3.0
drivers. The problem dissapears when I go back to the original 2.x
drivers. And yes F1RS has been the only program that has done this. :(

Yep,  and AFAIC,  GP2 still beats it for that driving feel.   There
just seems to be something lacking in the "feel"  dept in F1RS.

Now thats what I call a detailed analysis of F1RS's flaws!  Just
kidding. :)

If you cant pinpoint exactly what's wrong with the "driving feel" of
F1RS, could it be simply because you are very used to GP2?  Just a
though, I know Im the same way with other types of games.

Ive only seen GP2 played, but by all accounts it sounds like an
impressive sim.

I just dont understand why MicroProse didnt create a 3D patch for it.
A patch would have sold many more copies of the game, especially when
for the longest time there was no other Formula 1 racing sim that was
as realistic.
As it is now, it may be a great sim, but the graphics are dated and
the competition has caught up (F1RS).  By the time GP3 comes out with
3D support, F1RS will have a good chunk of the market and would have
stolen the wind from GP3's sails.

What is AFAIC ?.   AS to F1rs  my first impression was like yours but
the more I used it the more I liked it.  It wouldn't be much of a
challenge if it felt like GP2.  There are some menu problem to be
worked out but I think it is a great sim.  Will I delete GP2 from my
HD ?  No.  Will I buy GP3 the first day it is available? Yes.   For
every great sims (ICR2, GP2, SODA, F1RS, and N2)  we get a
dozen losers (CPR ,  NFS2, Test Drive4, etc.) .  Thank God for
demos.  Just my 2 cents.  BTW please respond on AFAIC.  Am I miss-
ing out on a great sim ?

I think that AFAIC means 'As far as i'm concerned'..this is not a sim
:)))))

hope that helps, too bad it doesnt support 3dfx... :)

I find  it difficult to describe,  and maybe its because I haven't
played it enough,  but a lot of these other "sims"  feel as if they
are floating above the track,  some more than others.

Yes it is,  and you should try playing it.

Probably more than a patch would be required and just too much work
involved.

In my book,  graphics aren't everything.  I have seen this all too
often in the past,  and even more recently with the newer racing
games.  Enhanced graphics,  but the game being let down by the poor
gameplay.   GP2 still has it for me,  and I dont think the graphics
are that bad,  and lets face it,  if you're playing with a game like
this,  who really has the time to look at all that detail.

I just hope that there will be a GP3.

Cheers.....Ken
