I've never been able to update 3dfx drivers for my Creative Voodoo2 12MB,
anything above Glide 2.53 has always been completely screwed up. Whenever I
install the Glide 2.54 version (3dfx reference, or Creative for that
matter), the graphics look like someone poured a bucket of white paint into
my monitor, and then cleaned up the mess in a hurry. This shows especially
in 3Dmark 99, and Colin McRae Rally. So I'm stuck with the older reference
drivers (DirectX 5.0).
Yesterday I downloaded the NFS4 demo, and I was warned during the
installation that newer 3dfx drivers were required. I ignored the warning,
and ran the demo just the same. This resulted in a hard crash, even
ctrl-alt-del couldn't get me out of that one!
I then spent a good hour tracking down every Voodoo-related thingy on my
computer (in the registry as well), and viciously deleting it. I uninstalled
the card, and tried an ultra-clean reinstall with those infamous Glide 2.54
reference drivers. Right after that, I anxiously ran a new benchmark in
3Dmark 99, only to find that things were completely screwed up again. I
reinstalled 2.53 again, and all was back to 'normal'.
So here's the deal:
- NFS4 demo (and probably the full game) won't run with old drivers.
- My Creative Voodoo2 12MB won't run (properly) with new drivers.
Right now I'm about to jump of a rather large building. Any last advice?
