You can always argue about music in car-games, but sometimes its great.

Ok, these games gets my vote: (In no particular order really)

1. Need For Speed : Porsche Unleashed.
These music sets you in the mood to go faster down cot da'zur (spelling?).
Brilliant mix of electronic music, with some samples you recognise from
Elektric Music etc.

2. Ridge Racer 4 : Offers lots of "Acid jazz techno". Especially track 3+6
is one of my favourites.
Not to mention the catchy main-tune "he is ridge racer" ;)

3. Rage Racer : Namco always had great music (until Ridge Racer 5, which
lacked in the audio-department)

4. F1 2001 : Only offers menu-music, but well written pieces from Chicane.
It made me spend more time
in the menus, then on the racetrack ;D (I copied the music into F1 2002
also, since F1 2002 didnt have as good)

5. Need for speed 4 : There is one song that stands out more then the
others, "Quantum Singularity". Listen
to the low frequency bass!. Omg!, brilliant track.

6. Ridge Racer 1 : yes.. some brilliant masterpieces.

7. West Racing : I hope to put you here ;)

music i cant stand :

Sega Rally 1 + 2, Super GT, etc. (Dont know why, but i always found it
sounds.. like bad rock music.. and i dont
like rock music)

Hehe, well, i find the sound in GPL to be a bit lacking.
Same sample for all revs, and it sounds the same in neatral as under load,
aswell as no idle sound, no gearbox whine, etc. Maybe GPL2 will change it :)

there is a system [1] which models the sound producing bits of an
engine to create the sound.  if, for example a cylinder stops working,
that'll change in the model and the sound will change too.  if it
works in real-time, i image it'll be a big step forwards for our
ear-drums.

i read a bit about it in a copy of the Edge a while (18 months?) back.

i mentioned this to chris west last year (when he was at the lan), and
he knew a lot about it.   :-)

I typically turn off any default music, and instead play my own.  The
Ozric Tentacles are much better than anything I have heard in these games...

Hey I posted something like this in 1997 here on r.a.s.  Here are some
selected answers from me and others :

- The 2 tracks that were on the CD version of Nascar Racing (the original
one).  :-)
- Indianapolis 500 : The Simulation (intro music)
- IndyCar Racing 2 (intro music)
- Any track from the Need for Speed series.
- Interstate 76 (I really have to agree, it's great music)

Reminds of the "Top 10 strategy tips" I read for a strategy game I used
to play, the name of which escapes me at the moment of course,
"something General", tip number 10 said;

"Turn off the music, nobody can win this game with that awful music
playing"

Been doing that ever since, it works :-)

Beers and cheers
