N2002 modem help?

by R Keatin » Thu, 30 May 2002 07:18:43

I am on a poor quality phone line with a US Robotics 56K FAX EXT PnP (there
is no cable or DSL available here).  People have told me to disable error
correction, and I've done that in the modem/connection/advanced section of
Windows.  When I look at the modem log file (in that same window), it says
error correction is enabled.  If I turn error correction off with "&M0" then
no races are listed in N2002 though I see who is logged in and the chat
conversations.

What "Extra settings" are others using for this type of modem?  I am
currently using:

&N14 -forces 28.8 (but also turns off error correction and compression)
&M4  -turns the error correction back on (because I can't see races without
it)
&K1 -turns compression back on.

It appears from the log that I can't have error control off and compression
on.

Thanks for any help,
Russell

The only thing I used when I was on dialup with a USR modem was S32=98.
That would disable V90 connections which I found were not good for online
gameplay.
I would typically connect at 33,200 with those settings as opposed to 50,666
without.

Give it a try and see what you think. I had very few problems racing when I
was on dialup although I would never want to go back. ;-)

Well, that's 2 for this setting.  I'll give it a try, but considering on a
good day with all the stars and planets aligned, I can maybe get 31.2, so I
doubt I am even getting into the land of V90 for it to be an issues.  I'll
try though.

Thanks,
Russell

You might try a "clean" line directly from the d-mark to the modem and see
if you get an improvement.
