N2002 multiplayer, modem error correction?

It was suggested I turn off error correction to improve my connection.  I
uncheck the option in Windows, but when I look in the modem log, it still
says error correction is on.  So I used a modem command string to turn off
error correction.  If I do that, I verified in the modem log that it is
off), I can't see any races listed in N2002.  I see the people (on the
right) that are logged in, and I can see the chat on the left, but no matter
how long a wait no races appear.  If I put the error correction back on and
start over, the races appear again.

The modem is a US Robotics External Fax 56K (v92).

Ideas?
