EA SBK2001 on a LAN?

by pjgt.. » Fri, 15 Jun 2001 02:20:10

Hi peeps.

I've got two copies of EA Sports Superbike 2001, which I've installed
(full install) on both pc's at home (Celeron 450 with 128MB pc100 ram,
and Athlon 900 with 256MB pc133 ram, and V3 2000 cards in both pc's).

However, the game refuses to work on a LAN (peer to peer). I've tried
having either pc as host, then as client, but neither appears to see the
other?

All my other games (GPL, TOCA2, GP3,Re-Volt, Super 1 Karting, etc)work
on this same LAN ok, so there is no problem with the LAN set-up.

Anyone have any ideas how to get this working?

Ta....

From the readme.txt file:
"The game supports TCP/IP LAN & Internet connection only."

So, if you don't have the systems set up with IP address(static or DHCP), it
isn't going to work...

Thanx, Eldredp, but what does that actually mean?

I do have aLAN set up with IP addresses, AFAIK the pc's give themselves
an IP address when the network is running. So this *is* an IP LAN isn't
it?

I just checked my game.  Yep, I see the network screen, along with the 'race
list'.  I only have one copy of the program though, so I can't test it out.  To
make sure your systems have an IP address, click Start, Run.  Type winipcfg and
hit <enter>.  Make sure the correct network interface is selected.  If it has a
good IP number, maybe try plugging that number in the other system to look for?
I should see if I can temporarily use the CD in another machine to try a
network connection...  I'll get back to you.

Yep - it worked fine by swapping the CD when each system asked for it.  I
created a game on my laptop, and joined from my desktop.  It saw the game
without having to do anything special.  At the network screen, does it show the
correct IP address for each system?  How are your systems connected together?
Mine connect through a hub - I don't know if that would matter...

EA SBK2001 on a LAN?

by pjgt.. » Sun, 17 Jun 2001 18:29:00

Ok, step by step here:

I start both pc's, they are linked via network (two network cards &
twisted pair cable on a peer to peer network).

I go to my computer and/or explorer and check that both pc's can see
each other in network neighbourhood. They can, the network is working
fine.

I start SBK2001 on both pc's. The games start ok.

I go to the network game screen on both pc's.

I check that both pc's are showing the correct IP address. They are
correct.

I select create on one pc, and choose a session name and select ok. The
player list screen appears.

I go to the other pc and select join, but nothing happens as there is no
multiplayer game showing in the available sessions list.

I swap around and create a new multiplayer game on the other pc first,
and then try to join with the the pc, but the same thing happens.

I then try entering the ip address into the enter ip address box. This
still doesn't help.

It appears that neither pc can see each other (when sbk2001 is running),
but they can see each other when sbk2001 is not running, or when using
all my other games.

The problem seems limited to sbk2001 only?

One last point, I have win 95 (osr2) on one pc, and win98(se) on the
other, so maybe this is causing a problem? but as I say, it doesn't seem
to affect anything else? and it clearly states on the sbk2001 box that
it is designed for win95 and win98, so it shouldn't be an issue?

I'm completely out of ideas, but would love to get this working on a
LAN, as it is a great bike sim.

Just something that popped into my head.... do you have a shared resource
set up on the computer your trying to connect to? We had a similar sort of
thing happen in a multiplayer Half Life session quite a while back. Sharing
the HDs on both computers magically cured it.

Were you running win95?  Neither of my systems has any shared resources, and
SBK works fine.  But, I'm running win98se.

Well, it SHOULDN'T, but maybe the different versions don't communicate like the
game thinks they should.  Both of my systems were win98se, but I seem to
remember issues like this when I still ran win95...  I don't think win95 plays
nice...<g>

I don't remember Eldred... I was running Win98 at the time, but I don't know

When you state that the ip addresses are "correct", what are they?  In
our experience, both using twisted pairs and a hub, you have to have
the ip's on the "dummy" numbers, i.e.  100.100.100.1 on the master and
100.100.100.2 on the second machine.  Then, you have to have the
subnet mask at 255.255.255.0 for both machines.  There are other dummy
numbers, but these always worked for us.  You have to do this with
most modern games that are not pure IPX.

All the hard drives (and cd's) on both pc's are shared, so it shouldn't
be a problem, or should it?

I checked the ip addresses using winipcfg.exe bofore running the game,
and the ip addresses shown in SBK2001 were the same as the addresses
shown in winipcfg, so I assume they are correct?

Peter, I've never had any luck with any other ip's other than those
dummy ones.  I know it works with them, I've used it.  The only way
(that I am aware of) you can use "genuine" ip addresses is if you are
both on the net.  We can both do that on a cable modem as well.  But,
if the cable modem is down (using a hub, twisted pairs will be the
same) we have to go with the 100.100.100.1 and .2 numbers.  These
numbers are put in manually into your ip section of network
properties.

If you can see each other, then that proves that the IPX works, and
that the connection is good.  Once you get the ip dialed in, you'll be
all set.  You might also want to try another game, just to check
(Unreal Tournament is a good test, as is Quake 3, or even GP3).

Wow, mine worked using the 169. numbers that win98 filled in because it
couldn't find a DHCP server.  I don't see why it matters WHAT numbers they are,
as long as you're separate from the internet.  That's just a wierd problem
there, Peter...<shrug>
