GPL...cable modems...any catch?

by Wille » Mon, 13 Mar 2000 04:00:00

Hi,

i'm in my 3 monthly period of driving GPL like a madman...
Now i recently switched to cable...coming from a lowly 28k8.
Now the pings to several servers are extrrrrrremly good...under 100ms
and no loss.
However...i have yet to finsish a race...all the ones i was in kicked
me out after xx laps with 'unacceptable thruput'
I allmost never had this when i was still on my modem...maybe 1 out of
20 races it happened...now with cable it's all the time...
SO is there a catch to GPL and cable modems?...and is there anything i
can do to improve things?

Cheers,
Willem

Your not the only one, I too have a disco problem with GPL while using
my cable modem. Any other game online is flawless, it's weird.
There are some servers for gpl that are totally perfect and I have
never discoed ,warped or have had clock smashes with them. I just wish
there was more of them. This is the main reason why I'm not racing gpl
as much as I used to, it does get frustrating, especially if your in a
league.
Just check your hops/Route to the game server, some times you'll notice
a bad hop that keeps timing out and that could cause a disco. Maybe the
only thing you can do is report the bad hops to your ISP and maybe they
will take some action on the hop to get it shut down or force the
organization to fix it. When I hook up to any UK server I find there is
a bunch of Servers in New York City area run by the same company that is
just Horrible and it shuts me down every time. Maybe if people start
complaining about some of the sub par servers out there the internet
would be much better. You may get a 80ms ping but that's useless if only
5 of 10 packets make it.
But gpl does seem to be sensitive to cable modem's and packet loss.
One Big bad Apple can ruin the whole bunch. ;)

problem going out west but it's usually hopless<g> going east.

Good Luck.

I dont know what brand of cable modem you have now, but beg your cable
provider for a different one. I went from a lan city (always dropped from
races) to a surfboard (never get tossed unless the host goes down).
seriously like night and day, the whole time i thought it had to be my cable
provider, but it was the modem droppin packets the whole time.

btw its a General Instruments Surf-Board External SB3100 cable modem. Im
told it can handle fluctuations of your connection much better than some
other cable modems.

> So is there a catch to GPL and cable modems?...and
> is there anything i can do to improve things?

I recently ditched my Motorola cable modem in favor
of an ADSL connection for exactly the same reason - I
couldn't stay connected to servers.

The first thing I noticed when tracing routes to
servers is the that the ADSL guys seem to have their
networks sorted out far better than the cable modem
companies. For me, there is at least 7 hops to any

connection it is three to any backbone. Also ping
times within the ADSL network are in the ***s, within
the cable modem network they sometimes varied widely

The second thing I noticed is that the ADSL
connection offers far better upstream bandwidth.
I never got over 8 Kbytes/s with the cable modem
(only slightly better than a 56k modem), with the
ADSL connection I routinely see 24 Kbytes/s.

block incoming connection.  Not a problem with
ADSL though.

Additionaly, ADSL in my case offers better
downstream bandwidth. This came as a bit of a
surprise, but I routinely see 2 - 3 times more
throughput.

So far I haven't suffered a single disco racing GPL
online, nor have I had any network outages -

least three times a week for the entire four months
I was a subscriber.

As always your mileage may vary,

GPL...cable modems...any catch?

by Wille » Mon, 13 Mar 2000 04:00:00

Hi,

Mine is a com21 comport 1000 cable modem.
I have no idea if this is a good or a 'bad' modem.
All i know is that asking my provider for a different modem will
result in the general responce 'up yours'.
This ISP has a monopoly and their customer service is widely know as
non exsistant...
Those who've watched the GP might have seen it on the new arrows
car...
The 'chello broadband' advertising on it....that's my provider...and
really they should have taken that advertising money and put it into
improving their network instead....sigh
I'd like to hear people's experiences with this modem cause i'm pretty
sure a lot of dutchies might be using this provider and this cable
modem...

Cheers,
Willem

Willem, I have the same modem, and allmost never have problems during
online races. Only two times that I can remember, because both times
it was during a league race :(((

I don't know much about cable modems, but I went to
http://www.speedguide.net/Cable_modems/index.shtml
and did some of the registry tweaks. I haven't had a single problem
since then, but I did this only a week ago, so I didn't have enough
testing time to be sure yet.

I don't get this Chello thing by the way. My provider was Gelrevision,
which has been taken over by UPS, and lately I recieved a letter that
I will be migrated to Chello.

Oh well, even with the problems I had, the connection is mostly very
good, and before I had my cable connection I had phone bills of around
600-700 Guilders, so I'm still very pleased with my cable connection
:)
