GPL & cable modem (Road Runner)

Hello all,

I FINALLY purchased GPL and it's great. But, when I go to multiplayer, it
only lists my two COM ports and not TCP/IP to connect with.  I'm still a
little confused with the core.ini stuff I've been reading about. So if
anyone would like to explain it to me like I'm a 3 year old  :), I would
greatly appreciate it. BTW, my cable modem is bi-directional, if that helps
at all.

Thanks,

Aaron McCarthy

Hi Aaron,

Let me give it a shot.

1. Run Notepad by choosing: START / Programs / Accessories / Notepad
2. Type the following:
        [communications]
        alternate_ip_addr_lookup=1
3. Choose FILE | SAVE AS....
4. Locate your GPL folder (where the GPL.EXE programs is)
5. For the filename type: core.ini
6. Press SAVE.
7. Start GPL -- you should now see a TCP-IP option when choosing "Connect
VIA..."
8. One thing to notice is that when joining a race on VROC, after choosing the
players entry from the address book, you will need to re-select the TCP-IP
address that you want to use as your connection.   Basically, if you cannot
connect to the game, choose the other TCP-IP address.  One is your local IP
address and the other is your Internet IP address.  You want to choose your
internet IP address.

Did that work? :-)

You can get more information from the GPL/readme.txt file about cable modems.

Jason.

modems.

Thanks Jason, But I've read the vague readme and did what is says and still
no TCP/IP option in the Multiplayer menu only COM 1 and COM 2 support.

Not sure what's going on but it's one odd way to code multiplayer. Hope N3
is a little more improved. Judging Papy's past, it will be.

Do as he told you, and it will work. I have a cable modem, did this
modification to the "core.ini" file and it worked!

Aaron,

I too had this problem when I first got Roadrunner. You still have to
follow the core.ini suggestion but here's what made it work for me:

1. In control panel/ network settings you should only have Client for Microsoft
Networks, your network card, and TCP/IP. Get rid of Netbui and everything else
in there. You don't need it.
2. Make sure nothing is overclocked, especially your voodoo2 if you have one.
3. Uninstall/ reinstall GPL and try it out. This first part got me somewhere
but I still had a problem until I........
4. Try changing the physical positions of your PCI cards so that the voodoo
card and network card are as far apart as possible. The PCI sound card (if
that's what you have) half way in between. After this everything was back to
normal (but way better).

I know it sounds weird but I had this same situation and that's what worked for
me.
