Nascar Legends-Mixed Feelings

Hi all

Having heard it here first, that NL was out, I just *had*to drop
everything & run on out to pick up a copy.  EB-$45 bux.  Got it home &
fired it right up.  Full install-170MB.  Compared to a lot of titles out
there today, especially in the flight category, that isn't bad at all.
Everything goes smooth without a hitch.  Of course!  This is Papy we're
talkin about here!  Intro movie is cool.  I could swear I saw a lot of
that footage on ABC Wide World of Sports when I was a kid.  OK, lets go
hit Tally, er--Alabama International Speedway.  Just like N3, the
default setups are pretty good as they stand.  And you just *gotta*
check out the cool pace car!!  Then I see something really strange on
the wall of T1.  Going into T3, & there it is again.  On the wall.  It
says, "Talladega USA".  OK, I'm a little young to remember this clearly,
but it sure don't seem right to me.  When did Talladega get put on the
walls?  Get going for the race.  The car now seems a lot more stable.  I
suppose it should, its about twice the weight.  Going into T3 once, AJ
Foyt comes down on me to try & slam the door.  Instead he gives me a
real good whack, & I'm able to save it with a quick flick of
opposite-lock.  Don't try this on the other Nascar versions, kids!  Then
there are the crewchief & spotter.  Same guys.  Cmon now, I don't think
Jeff Gordon was even *born* yet, never mind being able to spot for
anyone.  LOL!  The engine sound too is either the same as N3, or is
very, very close.  Cool tire squeal in the corners, really hear them
bias-plies howling for mercy.  Give it about 10-12 good hard laps &
you'll have some hot worn tires on your hands.  Pit sounds are
different.  Air guns seem a little wimpier sounding.  All in all, its a
lot of fun.  But there are a lot of similarities too, but I suppose we
shouldn't be too surprised.  A couple things that really did take me by
surprise, though:  1) Racing back to the yellow !?! and 2) an option for
double file restarts??  I don't think so!  Glad I bought it, though.
Gonna try out some online racing with it tonight!!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought there was no spotter in 1970...
Also, from all the preview I read, there wasn't supposed to be any
spotters in the game.

The manual said they used the double-file restarts in '70, and being a '67
model myself I couldn't argue with it.  I vaguely remember something about
when the double-file rule was put into effect a few years back, that it was
a resurrection of an older rule.  Or they're just pulling wool over our eyes
<g>.

Of course, both this and the spotter can be turned off, so if you demand
absolute realism (if that rule wasn't really used) you can do away with 'em.
They probably figured they didn't want to pull something like with GPL and
no AI adjustment, so put the spotter in for those who were just too used to
N2/N3.

Bingo about the spotter.  We had the spotter removed until very late in
development of NASCAR Legends,  but after running a bunch of multiplayer
races without the spotter, we decided the information provided by the
spotter is too important for most people to be able to do without.

I would have to agree about the spotter... it's a must have for the
multi-player games.
If this were real life and we could turn our heads and look out the side
windows, etc, then it wouldn't
be a problem, but since were limited to a 2-D world, having the spotter
is a very good compromise.

Boy oh boy, everyone is asking about Riverside, but you hit it right on
the money about Bowman Gray.
It is the most fun that I've had with a Nascar Race in a long time.  An
absolute blast!!!

As for the physics, so far I've found them to be most acceptable.  For
those of you with
Speedvision, they have a show called Car and Track which shows a lot of
footage from the '70s
races at Talladega.  I took the line that I've seen Petty run there and
tried it in NL.  They
would run into the corners low, drift up to about the middle of the
track mid-way through the corner,
then turn back down to the bottom of the corner at the exit.  Result...
with the ACE setup, I broke the track record by .14 seconds.  (This was
in Testing Mode...)

So far, I am very happy with the game, but now I've got to get back to
that 100% race at
Bowman Gray!

Union bought them out in 69 or 70, I can't remember which.  Anyway the 70
race tapes clearly show the 76 ball and not the old Pure oil ball.

So, frankly, you've shelled out for what would be a free net download
for most games. Take GP2 for instance.....

First of all, let me say I really enjoy the game.  One problem tho, and
I dont know if anyone can help me with this. I put Hickory and Myrtle
Beach and Nashville in there from N99, and it screws up the colors of
the car.  I dont know if its a track pallete or car pallette problem.
Suggestions?

You're telling me people on line listen to the spotter?  Man, that's funny!

Seriously.  Nice sim Charlie.  Ran a race at Bowman last night.  Incredible
experience!

I was at Bowman last night, too.  A couple of races.  Hell, you can't *help*
but hear the spotter there!  Unless you turn him completely off, of course.  I
think it was a good decision by Papy to add it in, myself.  Those who don't
want it can just shut it off.  But if it had never been added, those who want
(or need) it would have been left out.  A spotter can be handy in places like
C***te, Michigan, and Alabama.  Good move, Papy!
