The "Strategy Guide" for GPL talks about the "third kind of Intel
Pentium"...that being the Celeron,
a computer for computer literate guys who can soup it up. is this correct ?
Can you buy Celerons anywhere? Are they that economical? Do the big guys
e.g. Dell, Gateway, etc. ) make them ?

Ok gurus educate me!

THANKS !

Intel makes them. I'd order it over the net of you're definitely going to get
one. You need a BX motherboard and PC100 SDRAM as well. I haven't got one, so
that's all I know.

It absolutely is the BEST!  You've never seen this kind of speed, smooth
graphics (even with Voodoo1), and framerates.  It's the best computer
purchase I've ever made.

In Aus you can buy a celeron 300A  processor for about $490 which i have read
can be
overclocked to 450 using 100mhz bus speed.  Or you can buy a PII450 processor
for $1600.  You tell me how much you would rather spend!
You can usually buy them from any store that sells PC hardware and people like
DELL and Gateway do sell Celeron PC but you void the warrenty as soon as you
overclock !!

Actually I will be putting in an Abit bx6 mb,  Celeron300A, 128meg pc100
ram tomorrow. The system bus will run at 100mhz with a multiplier of up to
4.5 or 450mhz cpu speed. At that it will perform as well as a pII450 for
about 500$ less!
It must be a celeron A as the plain celeron doesn't have a second level
cache.

The Celeron is nothing special compared to a standard PII - in fact its
inferior - but its way cheaper and can be seriously overclocked - thats why
people like it. With a BX board you can spend USD 85 on a standard Celeron
266, and overclock it to 400+ for great *** performance - but windows
performance is poor as it has no L2 cache.
THe new Celeron 300A is a good compromise as it does have some cache, but
its still twice the price of a standard Celery (as they are affectionately
known).

Intel Celeron 300a with L2 cache is a very good choice for GPL. It can be
run at 450 MHz on a BX motherboard, giving P2 450 performance at a much
lower price. Read all about it here:

You guys must be kidding right?  The price of a PII400 is over  1,600???
Yeah right!  This must be by itself right?  I just saw a computer:
PII400
64 ram
32x CD
blah, blah, blah(You know the rest nowadays)

For 1,600.  Now for a single Pentium to be that much is outrageous!

Um, did y'all notice he said, "in Aus..."? Now I could be wrong, but I'm
guessing that means Australia, where the prices might just be a little different
then they are here.

Celeron and GPL

Hey John... I have a celeron 300a with a Soyo SY-6BA (More info at
www.tomshardware.com) and run the celeron at 450 with no lockup problems at
all.  I have heard very good things about the abit bx6 --- keep trying it could
be something very minro.  Might also want to try increasing your voltage on
your MB from 2.0 to 2.1 or 2.2.

Hope that helps...
