GPL with O/C Celeron 266?

by Nathan Wo » Mon, 02 Nov 1998 04:00:00

G'Day guys,

Just picked myself up a cheap 266 Celeron and assorted goodies such as
ABit BH6 moterboard, and will be clocking it to 400 (maybe 448) later
this week. How does GPL run with such a setup compared to the full
blown p2-400 systems?

I am going to be running a 12MB Voodoo II in conjunction with an 8MB
Intel i740 AGp card, and 64MB PC100 RAM.

Thanks

It runs very very well, I have almost the identical system P266Celeron
o'clocked to 112mhz on an Abit BX6. Works great even for hosting online
GPL sessions, with just tweaking a few of the graphics options. (When
hosting you have to try and maintain 36fps most of the time).

412mhz = 4 x 100 bus speed + turbo option.

I've even ran it at 448mhz by bumping up the voltage and it runs Win98 fine but
GPL freezes after about 10 minutes... I think maybe the voodoo2 overheats at
448mhz. I went back to 412mhz for now since it is rock stable for the last
3 months, eventually I might go through the trouble of getting 448 mhz stable.

You should run GPL just great, awesome performance from that Celery chip
for the $80 cost of the CPU.

Seeyas on the track.

I have the exact same setup, Celeron at 448, and GPL flies with a 12 MB V2.
In a race I get around 24 fps at the start, and at the first turn the frame
rate is usually maxed out at 36.  Being close behind 4-5 cars results in no
slowdown.  You will love it.  From what I hear, a Celeron 448 is about equal
to a PII-400 on most games.
